May 26, 1637, the Puritans and their allies surround the Pequot Indian stronghold called Mystic Fort near what is now Stonington, Connecticut. They set it ablaze, then shoot those who flee the flames. By dawn, over 400 are dead—mostly women and children.

And yet, we still call Puritans the “peaceful” settlers.

Poppy Pod

A top-down, view of a poppy seed pod. The pod is a soft, muted green, somewhat spherical but flattened at the top where the stigma disk is prominently featured.

The stigma disk is the most striking element, forming a star-like pattern with twelve radiating segments or rays. These segments are a warm golden-brown color, with darker, reddish-brown lines running down their centers, creating a strong contrast against the lighter parts.

The background is softly blurred, providing a shallow depth of field that keeps the focus entirely on the poppy pod. The colors in the background are mostly muted greens and browns.

On July 3rd, astronaut Nichole Ayers photographed a rare Gigantic jet from the ISS. These upward directed electrical discharges extend 90-100 km high into the atmosphere.

I processed this image from the RAW file, adjusting the white balance, contrast and noise reduction.
