Among the most successful of the TX natives I planted in the spring are the Turk’s Caps, all have thrived & grown big, all are still blooming. And they’re very popular with the hummingbirds and #butterflies, such as this Gulf Fritillary.

Clearing out all the past-their-prime zinnias from the front garden bed yesterday and this giant swallowtail showed up and hung around the lantana long enough for me to go grab my camera.

This morning I knew this chrysalis was about to be ready. Went for an hour for a walk, came back, and there is a new Monarch 🦋 😍. Still has to let the wings dry and unfold.
Always in wonder how this large butterfly fits into the small bag.

The Spotted Fritillary is a medium-sized butterfly with a vibrant orange-brown upperside marked by dark spots. When its wings are closed, the underside reveals a chequered pattern of cream and pale orange bands, highlighted by two irregular orangey-red bands. You will typically find this species in sun-drenched, open areas like dry meadows, where it frequently lands on bright yellow flowers.

I was just photographing this beautiful butterfly caterpillar on the little-traveled road when someone tapped me on the shoulder and quietly said, "Look over there!"
Had we not stopped for the caterpillar, we would have been very close...
Btw, this is the caterpillar (second photo for sure) of the Mourning Cloak butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa).

A small butterfly feeds at a yellow sunflower. The butterfly probably has blue on the top of their wings, which are currently closed up to show the underside, which is beige with orange and brown dots, turning more blue and slightly fuzzy where the wings meet the body.

Still not many #butterflies around but there’s been a bit of uptick in activity the past week. This was the first gulf fritillary I’ve seen making a stop in the front #garden, spent a little time with the mealy blue sage before flittering on.

Three #photos today. Saw this pipevine #swallowtail flittering around the backyard and eventually it zeroed in on the #pipevine I planted earlier this spring just for this species (its host plant). Captured it alighting on it then depositing a clutch of #eggs.
