A mild chicane in a rail line can be seen up ahead looking east from the bridge to the local cemetery. Although we're in town, you wouldn't know it. There are mountains of yellow in the frame, late-October fall trees surrounding us, remnants of the Great Carolinian Forest, and the rail bed itself lined with Halloween orange and browns. The yellow leaves seem to hold on longest. There's a V-shaped wedge of mottled blue sky in the background, summer's last goodbye wave.

#OTD in 1839.

John Herschel takes the first glass plate photograph. The word is based on the Greek φῶς (phos), meaning "light," & γραφή (graphê), meaning "drawing, writing," together meaning "drawing with light."

Herschel's research into making photographic images (anthotype process) from flowers was limited & was ultimately abandoned since no commercial application was feasible from a process which takes days to produce an image.

I’ve taken many shots like this, every year, with the same subject and in the same place. Yet I’m still fascinated by this perspective.
This one is from just a few hours ago: the sunset and the "fragile" flower. A breath of wind will be enough, and the flower, as we see it, will vanish. Yet it will be everywhere, spreading itself across the world.
There it stands, swaying in the gentle air and the soft warmth of a November sunset, defying whatever happens around it.

No yesterday, no tomorrow - just here, now, basking in this poetic light.

And life, silently, flows on.

I just saw a little ermine bouncing along the side of the road near my house. It didn't sit still long, but I managed to get two quick shots before it disappeared into the woods. I got very lucky with this one!
