The Yule Cat is a huge cat in Icelandic folklore that eats people who did not receive new clothing before Christmas Eve. The cat incentivized farmworkers to finish processing the wool they collected before Christmas, since they were rewarded with new clothes.

Inclusiveness

September 2025: There are lots of rainbow arches and pavements around Iceland, but this has to be my favourite.

The LGBTQ+ pride colours changing to transgender pride and back again at the far end is a clever idea.

The location of many happy marriages, I'm sure, this pavement can be found at Ísafjörður in the Westfjords of #Iceland.

One of my favourite #abandoned places that I have photographed Dagverðará, #iceland

While photographing it a large Icelandic Raven snuck up on me and cawed loudly right behind me, scaring the crap out of me! It's part of my book Icelandic Echoes, which you can find pretty easily with google.

The house has unfortunately been vandalised externally since I was lucky enough to photograph it here in Winter, 2017.

Infinite Loop

Over the 12 years that we've been taking holidays in Iceland, I must have snapped thousands of aurora photos. This one is still among my favourites.

November. The 94% illuminated moon was high in the south-east, and lit the mountains on the opposite side of Berufjörður. The night was clear and still.

This curl of green aurora looping over the peaks and reflecting in the fjord gave me this great shot.

I wanted to get a picture of a puffin with the mountains in the background instead of the sea. Without a wide-angle lens, this was the best I could pull off lol. I'm still kind of proud of it, though.
