A scattering of fall colored leaves, including Japanese maple leaves with thin lobes in shades of orange and red, red red maples leaves(!), and bright yellow leaves from some shrubs on a gray pavement bordering a garden. There are gray rocks in the flower bed, a couple of mushrooms with white caps and long thin brown Douglas fir cones spotted with white sap. The effect is almost like a rich dark colored tapestry.

Tulip trees (Liriodendron tulipifera) are one of my favorites, with their straight trunks and majestic shapes. Their leaves and flowers are pretty too. A native of eastern North America, it's a lovely park tree.

A tall, elegant tulip tree covered with golden leaves soars against the hazy blue and white skies. The lawn around the tree is carpeted with the four pointed leaves in shades of yellow to brown. The tree is backed by pine trees. Off to the left you can see more lawn leading down to the shore of Lake Washington, with the neighborhood spread across the distant shore, backed by a blue line of mountains.

Some tulip tree leaves fallen to the ground; they are atop a base of older, dark brown leaves; they have a shape vaguely similar to maple leaves, but the gour to six pointed lobes are not dentate. The leaves are bright or light yellow, orange, and tan. There are a few raindrops sitting on a few leaves.

A clump of white snowdrops blooms among the dry leaves in the backyard. The green leaves contrast nicely with the withered browns.

What is this? A fine salad green!
Miner's lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata) is really going to town! It is very tasty when freshly picked.

I may plant it next winter along with my mache

A messy mass of miner's lettuce fills the frame. The rounded spoon shaped leaves are pretty much hidden by the abundant painters palette shaped, green and fleshy bracts showcasing a cluster of about 5 or so tiny white flowers and flower buds at the center. The flowers are star shaped with 5 petals.

This plant is edible as a salad green. If you forage, you should pick it as far off trail as possible.

An image of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) roots growing on the side of a hill. The roots are gradually being exposed by weathering, and look a bit as if they are clinging for dear life. Doug firs are notoriously shallow rooted and are the most likely trees to fall in windy rainstorms

A young Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) has a mass of surface roots casually exploring the ground, with ferns, dewberries and small plants growing on top.

A few pink tulips grow haphazardly next to a stone wall. The pink is in shades from dark in the middle of the six petals to pale rose on the edges. A few of the tulip leaves are slightly bedraggled. There is a drift of white candy tuft growing down the wall on the top right, with its puffs of little flowers backdropping one of the tulips. A patch of Himalayan blackberries is trying to establish itself at the foot of the wall.

Riverbank lupines (Lupinus rivularis) are almost at the end of their bloom

A field full of lavender and white lupine flower spires show that the blooming period is, almost over. The pea-like flowers are concentrated at the top of the stems, with the velvety green seed pods already well formed at the bottom. The flowers are set against the deep green palmate leaves.

A purple smoke tree and a gold and green ninebark bush provide some pleasing summery color contrasts. Some of the oval smoke tree leaves have sunlight striking them, creating an orange glow. You can see the lobed and serrated ninebark leaves unfurl in shades of golden orange, move to yellow ,and get greener as they age.

A purple smoke tree is fronted by vivid magenta geranium flowers rising above their palmate serrated fuzzy green leaves. The smoke tree has a panicle of orange and yellow flowers, so small they give a hazy smoky effect when you approach the tree.

Color harmonizing between the house and front yard. . I see more and more houses breaking out of the suburban color schemes. I really like it.

The front porch and front of a slate blue house are trimmed in purple with a thread of magenta. A flower bed in the front yard echoes the color scheme with tall stemmed magenta mallows, purple lavender flowers and dusty blue green sage (I think Powis Castle wormwood).
