A stunning black and white photograph of a dramatic beach scene, featuring Haystack Rock (a 235 ft-tall / 72 m sea stack in Cannon Beach, Oregon). The sun is setting behind the monolithic rock with big dramatic clouds overhead in the sky, and the beach seems to go on forever leading out to the dark backlit rocks with wet sand reflecting the entire scene like a wavy mirror. A brilliant photograph of a deep forest riverbank at sunset. There are a number of tall craggy evergreen trees standing proud along the bank, reflected deep into the still water below. The brilliant pink sunset shines above and also serves to highlight the big clouds which are only visible below in the water. The whole photo has a greenish brown hue and the big bold cloud reflections look the best kind of swampy, as if showing a portal to a different universe of alien topography. The whole scene is at one tranquil and foreboding. Making me very glad we don’t have to spend the night here, but extremely pleased I got to witness it in person.

A dramatic black and white photograph of a lone tree on a steep cliff overlooking the ocean. The photo is taken from the edge of an empty highway fortified with a large concrete barrier. The road indirectly leads the eye back to the tree and beyond into the distance where we see the ocean below and cloud up above. This was taken on an old road converted to a walking trail at Devil’s Slide, on the way from Pacifica to Half Moon Bay, CA. A gorgeous spot to explore if you get a chance to head out there.

A stunning vertical black and white landscape photo of San Francisco looking out over the Mission District with the iconic downtown buildings and Bay Bridge in the distance. This is taken from Bernal Hill Park at sunset, so the rock formations and lower part of the photo are in partial shade from the setting sun, further highlighting the rest of the City in the distance. There are also two adorable puffy clouds floating above either side of SalesForce Tower (SF’s current tallest building) almost looking like quotation marks in the sky. The rest of the sky extending to the top of the photo is a smooth gray gradient from light at the horizon to dark at the very top, which helps to emphasize the distant skyline and fun little clouds floating above it. This isn’t a typical view of the City, but it’s one of my favorites.

This is a black and white film photograph I took of a pond's surface on a gray day. The surface is so still that it creates a mirror effect and is a little disorienting because it is hard to be certain what is up and what is down. But the image is oriented as it was taken without editing. So the silhouetted vegetation that appears against the reflected sky is only reflection. In the upper left quadrant a native plant juts out of the water and you see its base above the water, but its leaves and branches are reflected in the water below it in the bottom left quadrant of the photo. In the foreground, native grasses are out of focus and appear much larger than they are. You have the sensation of peering through them to the pond surface. The top of the image is a jumble of grasses and detritus that are growing out of and sitting on top of the pond water. A small stick is also floating on top of the water near another stick that is apparently stuck in the mud more or less vertically sticking out of the water and reflected in its surface, forming a small parabola.
