Hey so I got a new thing! It’s a Performer PL-CL-SE accelerator for the Mac SE from MacEffects. Supposed to make the lowly SE run like a SE/30 at 16Mhz.
Let’s pop it into one of my SEs and see how it “performs” 😄

I like to follow up my long form videos with a short for folks who just want a quick taste of something. Here's a short showing the gameplay of the Mattel Auto Race game. https://youtube.com/shorts/fFbnb1YJo2I?feature=share

So I've attached a USB to serial adapter to my laptop and hooked it up to the user port of my C64. After four lines of BASIC it actually displays a login prompt! How cool is that? Apart from the fact that the encoding is totally broken and the whole thing runs at only 600 baud.
New video! Troubleshooting and repairing a Commodore 64 that allegedly got damaged by over voltage. Some red herrings occurred.

How is the DOS PC game 'Discworld' 30 years old! 🤯
I wrote about this fantastic, yet very difficult point and click adventure in 2010 and also enhanced the original MIDI music for use within @scummvm
I think I'm putting my #ZXSpectrum raycaster to bed now that I have movement. I'm happy that it works (my first attempt at machine language) 😅. Some weird graphical glitches around certain intersections of ray path and map grid (jagged wall edges), but considering the huge approximations I made, it's not bad.
I moved it above the first 16k of memory that apparently makes it run faster and (combined with disabling interrupts) definitely does improve the refresh rate. #RetroComputing
The NoteCards hypermedia system was developed in Interlisp at Xerox PARC by @fghalasz Frank Halasz, Tom Moran, and Randy Trigg. In this 1985 videotape Moran introduced the main concepts of NoteCards, and Halasz demonstrated how to use the system to organize notes and sources for writing a research paper.

Hey #Portland #RetroComputing folks: The place I store much of my stuff was burglarized, trashed, and many items were stolen. The most valuable was a NeXTstation Turbo Color.
If you see one floating around, please let me know.
I don't have the serial number or anything identifying, other than the HDD is failed :(

Larry Masinter @masinter and Frank Halasz @fghalasz will be the guests of the next episode of "Do you speak tech?", the show Patrick Domanico hosts at Near FM community radio in Dublin. They will chat about Medley Interlisp, their memories of Xerox PARC, the computing world then and now, and more.
On March 10, 2025 at 19:00 UTC tune in to 90.3fm in the Dublin area or listen online here:
Wow, I didn't realise that LibreOffice turns 40 this year with it's latest release.
It started out as closed source Star Writer for CP/M in 1985 with DOS 3.2support in 1986.
Then became Star Office in 1994 for Windows 3.1
It became open source as Open office in 2001 and the LibreOffice fork in 2010.

New: I've analysed the source code for all 9 versions of Elite on the 6502, and I've put together a family tree showing the decade-long forking history of the source.

Progress! Ignore the camera pretending it has a heartbeat as it tries to decide what to focus on. Still nothing on the CGA, but I feel a lot better hearing that tone after @emily pointed out that I have to jumper the internal speaker on.
if anyone's interested in an #irc chat about #ttrpg (mostly #osr) and obscure #retrocomputing stuff you could try wilderland.ovh port 6667
also on the web as http://wilderland.ovh:9000

With almost 630 entries since 1959 and counting, the bibliography on the Medley Interlisp site chronicles the evolution of Interlisp and the Medley environment in the context of the history of Lisp and computing. It's also available on Zotero and lists research papers, technical reports, manuals, documents, and other resources.

My Easter treat has been to work on my silly hosted-at-home retro website. It now features actual content, animated GIFs, and photos of pineapples!
There's a few dynamic pages under cgi-bin, although they are not actually CGI scripts—they are generated by a Rust program. The dynamic content includes live energy stats, climate info, and memory & uptime info. I still want to fill out the content some more, but I also need to do other things.
