#Apple #iMac and #retrocomputing friends, I've just been handed a slot-loading iMac (running MacOS 9.2) that ran fine for five minutes... Then for the next five minutes, there was an occasional visual glitch with a softly audible sound every now and then, and then it abruptly switched off. Looked totally fine up until then.

Is this likely an internal PSU issue? How easy/awful is that to replace these days? I haven't touched one of these in 20 years and never did hardware support on them.

Old Computer Challenge 2026: "Make Something"

The #OldComputerChallenge is underway, with the theme being "make something." I've been going crazy making services for #CGHMN pretty much all year:

This week, I set up a classic Majordomo listserv and started the "retrochat" mailing list, giving CGHMN members a place to share and discuss whatever #retrocomputing -related things they've been up to. It ended up spurring interest in email on the network, and IRC has been buzzing with chatter about people trying to get accounts and clients set up.

In reviewing my research notes for a SIGGRAPH interview, I'm surprised at how accurately I determined the who and when of the UNIX V4 tape.

Before we had any supporting documents with the tape, I had to look elsewhere. My best source was a list of the first UNIX users outside of Bell Labs, which lists Martin Newell of the University of Utah as #19, but does not have any dates. To estimate when the tape would have been made, I tracked down the other institutions' histories and UNIX license agreements from their archives. This was tedious, but it was the only way I could narrow the timeframe. I determined that UNIX was likely licensed for the U in June 1974.

After determining that, a letter was found among the same papers as the tape, from Ken Thompson to Martin Newell, apologizing for their delay in sending the tape. It was dated 31 May 1974. Then, once we recovered the tape's data, the file system showed the tape was copied on 12 June 1974. Wow.

Running the live environment of the latest release of #Linux #Mint 7 #LMDE on my trusty old #Lenovo #M72E and it's just.. working. This tiny thin client with a CPU from 2013 and a whopping 8GB of RAM (I've got RAM, get me!) is just happily running a modern 64-bit environment.

Of course I'm sure that browsing the web, especially with multiple tabs open and in-memory, will quickly push it to/over its limits, but likewise, with some smart software choices and a more focused mindset, this could totally work fine for various use-cases.

My use-case is primarily that I'm running Windows XP (which it natively supports, yay for me!) on it as a light-weight setup that gets me to enjoy the last good version of Windows. Some say it's 7. I'd probably have to reluctantly agree on technical levels, but XP is where it's at for me. This, in part, because XP was also the last version of Windows I actively used, before switching fully to OS X — and Linux after that, of course.

I'm in the live environment as I wanted to dd the SSD with the current XP-and-7 installation before making some changes to it. It's easier to do that within Linux, but also because just wanted to see how Mint feels on this hardware. I left enough space on the internal SSD available, thinking I might actually want to put Linux on there too.

It's certainly lovely to see such a modern OS running on such "outdated" hardware. Maybe especially so because it's connected to a CRT monitor 😄.
