A Blue Jay perches on top of a cage suet feeder. The jay is facing left. Its face and throat are white, with a spot of black just in front of the eye. A necklace of black runs around the bird's neck. The bird's back is a soft blue. There is a white flash in the folded wing. The folded tertials and secondaries show bright blue with a black cross-pattern. The bird's tail is extended and slightly spread. The tail base color is light blue with a black cross-pattern. The tips of the tail feathers show large white spots. The cage feeder is hanging from a tree branch. Beyond the tree branch, another tree trunk is visible but slightly out of focus. I am watching you is a watercolour painting in portrait format by the artist Karen Kaspar. An owl is sitting on a branch. Two unusual things happened on Earth around 460 million years ago: a bunch of asteroid impacts near the equator & an intense global cold spell.

Possibly both were the result of an asteroid that broke up & gave our planet a pretty but deadly set of rings.

Yesterday's 12 mile hike included 6 miles on the shoulder of highway 101, but Strawberry Hill was on the way and was begging to be explored! I spent a good hour there watching the harbor seals and the pelicans. Here are a few of my favorite shots.

First, a celestial smash-up. JWST's infrared eyes reveal cold dust that forms the "skeleton" of these colliding galaxies, known as IC 2163 and NGC 2207.

Webb’s mid-infrared image excels at showing where the cold dust glows throughout these galaxies — and helps pinpoint where stars and star clusters are buried within the dust. Other pink dots may be objects that lie well behind these galaxies, including extremely distant active supermassive black holes known as quasars.
