(i think a great deal of hitler’s success was down to goebbels.) both mussolini and hitler lived in a time when the ongoing war of ideas between communism and capitalism were front and centre. </p><p>the labels and the details morph and change over time, but when our previous opposition leader threw words like “liberal”, “commie” or “woke” around, i suspect it was really more of the same.</p><p>in the red corner, people who think governments can and should care about everyone, and in the blue corner, those who think individualism is essential to god’s grand design.<br>I wonder, sometimes, if the USA is one western country that never really had a “left” at all.</p><p>On the very first page of his thesis, Santamaria suggests the Italian public embraced fascism (and the idea of a strong leader) because parliamentary democracy seemed to suck. <br>(Echos of this in Trump’s “drain the swamp” rhetoric, and his now open contempt for the system altogether)</p><p>Discussing Mussolini, Santamaria goes on to say Lenin believed “the only man who could successfully rule Italy was the one who reproduced in himself the main characteristics of the great mass of Italians”</p><p>The USA has a problematic electoral system, and many people are disenfranchised in one way or another. I don’t want to slander an entire nation, but I do wonder how many people found it easier to identify with Trump than with Harris?</p><p>Closer to home, how well do we identify with this or that type of leader in Australia? Do we reject potential leaders more easily than we embrace them? </p><p>1975 in Australia was a disappointment, but I distinctly remember that, apart from the scare about whitlam overspending/ seeking dodgy loans from someone with a foreign name, a lot of people were fed up with having to vote, and all the campaigning that goes with more-frequent-than-usual elections.</p>

<p>Very much enjoyed this talk of Adnan Husein with Alana Lentin.</p><p>Lentin makes a good case that Zionism is where Western racial fascism and colonialism have always been headed. Clarified a lot to me about the hasbara "the West is next" and the unconditional support of Western governments and the support of fascists for Zionism.</p><p>They talk about many things, like CRT, the antisemitism of anti-antisemitism, and how anti-colonial and anti-racism concepts/terminology are used in service of the colonialism and racism of the status quo. Do you understand what it means when someone criminalizes your existence? If "being trans" is illegal, how exactly does a person in "violation" of the law avoid breaking the law? A pogrom is just like a genocide, in fact one usually leads to the other; it's a process. First you isolate your targets, then you criminalize their existence, then you round them up, and eventually you start doing murders. That's the history, that's how this process works. When someone criminalizes your existence, it means they intend to f*cking KILL you. </p><p>The GOP is not making anti-trans legislation a primary plank in their political program for no reason. They're not trying to ban LGBTQ content in the public sphere for sh*ts and giggles. They are not trying to make it illegal to help, or support trans people because it'll look good on a campaign flier. They are not trying to give the Department of Justice a mandate to prosecute officials in other states for failing to police LGBTQ people and prosecute an anti-trans pogrom because it'll be a spicy talking point for Fox News monologues. And they certainly aren't trying to do all this on the federal level, through Project 2025, because they're undecided about how to proceed here.</p><p>This is a pogrom in process. This is what a pogrom looks like. This is how you make it "legal" to start murdering people you don't like in a "liberal democracy." This is no different at all than what the Nazi Party did to set up the Holocaust. I've been thinking about secondary outputs but I've been thinking way more about plastics, inks, other secondaries.</p><p>I have been worried about products shortages but maybe not enough. <p>Going to keep this one short because as is noted in the article, I strongly suspect this bill will "die in committee" but I still think it's instructional to examine what the more extreme members of the American fascist coalition, particularly those in office, are seeking to codify in law.
