Things I hate about Android: Having 2+ Google accounts is hell if you don't want the second account's contacts on your device. The contacts sync THE MOMENT your account is added, and you have to rush to disconnect your device from the internet and turn off sync before it puts the contacts on it.
And sometimes! the phone will randomly disrespect your settings and sync that other account's contacts regardless meaning you have to go through the whole process again!

So, Google is flexing to create the largest e-waste problem. In name of security (aka, force people to upgrade to new phones and trash a perfectly working device), Google is blocking anyone using custom ROMs on their smartphones, even if these ROMs bring latest OS and security patches, long abandoned by the original manufacturer. Apps refuse to work if the device is not seen as “certified” on the Play Store. Apps refuse to work if they are sideloaded. So that leaves you with a device that can run Android, but you can’t use apps that depend on Google Services. Things like push notifications, payments, banking, gone. GrapheneOS has called them out for this move. There is a way to manually add your device to Google Play devices and then you need to use Aurora Store instead of Play Store to install restricted apps. But for how long will this work?

Back in October I asked here why searching for “Norton Password Manager” on Chrome Web Store brings up five completely unrelated extensions which all show up before the actual Norton Password Manager. Now I know the answer: some extension authors figured out how to use translations in order to mess with the search results. https://palant.info/2025/01/08/how-extensions-trick-cws-search/
I found 920 extensions using this approach. Most of them fall into a few large extension clusters that are spamming Chrome Web Store. For example, I could attribute 122 extensions to the Kodice / Karbon Project / BroCode cluster that I covered in June 2023 originally. Another 100 extensions belong to the PDF Toolbox cluster that originally appeared on my blog in May 2023. The ZingFront / ZingDeck / BigMData cluster is one I also researched back in 2023 but didn’t publish – 223 extensions.
There is also a cluster that was new to me and which I couldn’t really tie to a company name (apart from finding two red herrings). There seems to be a Ukrainian/Russian language part and a Farsi (?) language part here, and it’s hundreds of extensions despite only 55 of them qualifying for the list in this article.
Now that this is out, are you as excited as me to see what Google will do about this?

This details many of Google’s shortcoming at keeping Chrome Web Store safe, with the conclusion: “for the end users the result is a huge (and rather dangerous) mess.”
I am explaining how Google handled (or rather didn’t handle for most part) my recent reports. How they make reporting problematic extensions extremely hard and then keep reporters in the dark about the state of these reports. How Google repeatedly chose to ignore their own policies and allowed shady, spammy and sometimes outright malicious extensions to prevail.
There is some text here on the completely meaningless “Featured” badge that is more likely to be awarded to malicious extensions than to legitimate ones. And how user reviews aren’t allowing informed decisions either because Google will allow even the most obvious fakes to remain.

This post provides more details on BIScience Ltd., another company selling browsing data of extension users. @tuckner and I wrote a bit about that one recently, but this has been going on since at least 2019 apparently. Google allows it as long as extension authors claim (not very convincingly) that this data collection is necessary for the extension’s functionality. It’s not that Google doesn’t have policies that would prohibit it, yet Google chooses not to enforce those.

Consider this: The #EU has just won 2 court cases against big tech. Yet these do not get continuous MSM attention. The USA banning #TikTok is wall-to-wall even here in Europe. We need to celebrate our wins more, not obsess about USA (frankly) incompetence.

Thanks to @mike, I just had an epiphany about why centralization of the Internet happened:
Web browsers like #Chrome and #Firefox are stuck in an old paradigm of webpages – which is an ancient way of viewing the web.
But that’s not how the actual web works anymore. The real web is no longer about pages but about feeds, and the folks building web browsers – #Google, #Apple, #Microsoft, and #Mozilla – still don’t realize this.
Even worse, feed functionality that used to exist natively in web browsers no longer exists. For example, it used to be that when you visited a webpage, web browsers would detect an #RSS feed – giving you the option to subscribe. But starting with #Chrome, this feature was removed from modern web browsers.
However, that doesn’t mean feeds have disappeared from the web. No, many have coalesced into walled gardens like #Twitter and #Instagram. And they’re downright hostile towards access if you do not have an account on their services.
But that doesn’t mean feeds have disappeared. Quite the opposite: they’re more prevalent than ever with forums, podcasts, video, and more. They’re still here, just harder to see simply because web browsers are stuck on that webpage paradigm.
So @surf is essentially a web browser, not with a webpage paradigm, but a webfeed paradigm where – instead of inputting URLs into an address bar – it grabs feeds across from RSS, #podcast, and #socialweb feeds.
And frankly, this approach is brilliant. I use #Surf every day, and it’s literally the first thing I check when I wake up in the morning.
With Surf, we’ve moved away from mere #Fediverse clients. Now we have a genuine web browser for feeds!

Report: In panic, #Google management issued P0 (top priority) order for Gulf of Mexico change.
Apparently Google management issued a P0 -- quite rare -- ordering geo employees to drop EVERYTHING else and do it immediately! -- for the change from "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America" for U.S. users. They were also ordered to move the status of the U.S. to "sensitive" where it joins countries like Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Iraq that demand the use of names not used elsewhere in the world.
I can't emphasize enough how telling it is that a P0 was issued. To me, it suggests absolute panic in the C-suite.
