Following their successful pivot from waste management to Search Results, #Google announces their new development team.
“That's a lovely query you got there…
be a shame if something…happened to it”
“Web based results will be encased in concrete for extra security, and rest soundly on bottom of the page - with da fishes”
- Sundar ‘Sonny’ Pichai - CEO
Real ‘I have a girlfriend but you can’t meet her’ energy
“The Verge reported that CEO Sundar Pichai defended the layoffs and claimed that workers sometimes reach out to express gratitude for the cuts.”

The AI boom requires massive data centers that consume enormous amounts of water and energy.
Tech CEOs have plans for hundreds more hyperscale facilities in the coming years, but activists around the world are fighting back to protect their communities and force us to ask who really benefits from the future Silicon Valley is building.
It's pretty clear that #Google is beginning to starve everything that isn't related to AI internally. This has dramatic implications for the future of the Internet and its users, even if you're not explicitly a Google user yourself.
Just got a #Google popup informing me that the login page will soon change for a more modern "updated look and feel". And the "feel" I'm getting is one of dread, because, really, how much of modern updated look and feel does a login page need?
Google paused AI chatbot Gemini’s ability to generate images after a segment of users complained of historical inaccuracies. Tech Crunch says it appears Google “had implemented clumsy hardcoding under the hood to attempt to 'correct' for biases in its model.” https://flip.it/ERELPr

Google’s AI chatbot and image generator Gemini has exposed deeper problems across the industry. With AI models so large and complex, there’s no easy fix to generating controversial images and text. Semafor has more: https://flip.it/NsqGL5

Google Authenticator still syncs two-factor authentication secrets without E2EE. If you enable cloud syncing, this means:
1️⃣ Google can read the secrets and generate one-time passwords for your accounts
2️⃣ Google knows the services you use
3️⃣ #Google knows your usernames
4️⃣ Given a court order, Google is obliged to hand over this data to law enforcement

Watch the others in the room. The assholes who jeer and manhandle the protestors. These are your peers in the tech industry. These are the “acceptable folks” in tech. Fuck these people.
Look at their faces. They know exactly what they’re complict in. Look at their smug smiles. Dickheads each one.

Here's how to keep your YouTube subscriptions private:
I did not realize that my #YouTube subscriptions were visible to the world. Turns out that keeping them private is *opt-in* for your #Google YouTube account...and worse, there's a #UX #darkpattern nudging you to not set them to #private. Typically, one turns *on* public features and the toggle in the *on* position would be for public setting. It's opposite here; you have to turn *on* private settings.
Here's how. Head to your YouTube privacy settings at the following #URL:
In news that really should qualify as a "water is wet" moment, it turns out that contrary to the beliefs of evangelists and folks who have a vested financial interested in selling you so-called "AI" products, LLMs and "artificial intelligence" are not going to save us from climate crisis, but are rather directly contributing to the problem and actively accelerating the heat death of a planet that can support 8B+ humans:
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/mar/07/ai-climate-change-energy-disinformation-report
Look, quite frankly I don't think you should have to be told that a product astronomically increasing energy demands in the Pig Empire, that requires an obscene amount of water just to keep the servers cool enough to operate, and allows climate science deniers and conspiracy theorist to generate a buttload of cheap propaganda and garbage disinformation, is not going to *help* us fight climate catastrophe. Given however that big market players who are actively trying to sell you AI products, companies like Google, are openly lying about its ability to do so, I guess it's necessary to keep producing and sharing articles like this one.
The plain truth here is that capitalists, corporations, and techbro fascists have long since decided that short term profits matter more to them than whether or not the rest of us boil to death on a rapidly overheating planet. Indeed, a desire to lock in that dynamic is almost certainly why all these rich people are paying to install fascism throughout the entire "West." AI products themselves are ultimately about locking in a fascist social order that precludes the possibility of change or human agency, because if you have the ability or the knowledge to affect change, you'll probably stop them from running us off the ecological cliff in pursuit of endless profits.
These folks will, and are, lying to you because all they care about is that filthy lucre, and they have long since bought up your states and regulatory bodies that should be warning you about this and working to stop them. It's not just a question of "don't believe the hype" but rather understanding that reactionary capitalists are not going to help you save a planet they've already decided to burn to ash for 5 points a share.

🎉 Exciting news for our Android folks!
On the latest update on Vivaldi 6.7, we've amped up Translate, improved the Tracker and Ad blocker functionality, tweaked the Bookmarks manager, and many other features based on YOUR feedback.
🔖 We understand that Bookmarks are one of the most important aspects of your browsing. Now, Vivaldi remembers the last folder you opened in the Bookmarks Panel. We've also tidied up your bookmarks by sorting folders first, making navigation a breeze.
⚙️ We work with Lingvanex continuously to make the built-in Vivaldi Translate more efficient. With an improved performance and the quality of translations, we hope you'll find speedy results.
In addition to the above, we’ve polished the user interface and made improvements to features across the board.

Layoffs are hitting workers at some tech giants like Google, Microsoft and Tesla. Here’s why that may backfire, explains Business Insider’s Tim Paradis. "In short, the effects of layoffs can counter the financial benefits of expenses carved out of a P&L."

Apparently Google accidentally deleted all online data from UniSuper, a superannuation fund with half a million members.
UniSuper was only able to restore from backups from a different service. If they'd been solely relying on Google, then UniSuper and their members would be screwed.
Google says "This is an isolated, ‘one-of-a-kind occurrence’" But I'm seeing reports on Lemmy claiming to have dealt with similar problems with Google, suggesting this only the first *major* customer it has happened to.
In any case, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Even that that basket tries to make it ever-so-convenient for you to give them everything.
Google plan to limit ad-blockers kicks off next week.
If only there were a way we could fire Chrome so we could out-fox Google's plan 🤔
Regular user: I want to feel safe and private.
Google: cool, anyways here's an AI that listens to your calls.
Microsoft: word, how about an AI that takes screenshots of everything you do?

Massive leak at #Google confirms what we have all known for years, just how much is tracked, stored, and monetized.
Even clearer now how Chrome tracks and reports EVERYTHING you do. For heavens' sake delete it now and move to Firefox
Also they've outright lied for years about their data collection and search practices.
Looks like 'Don't be evil' wasn't enough. ;)

#Google recently added a new revolutionary feature to *checks notes* "search the Web". But it's rather hidden. So Ernie Smith from Tedium developed
a simple webpage that adds an extra url parameter to your search to return a de-enshittified list of results –– or at least as de-enshittified as Google results can be nowadays.

When #Google tells you to eat glue and rocks, and the Internet sinks under hallucinatory generative "content" madly seeking clicks and likes, we went back to an actual, honest to goodness, encyclopedia.

U.S. judge rules #Google broke antitrust law in search case - https://www.reuters.com/legal/us-judge-rules-google-broke-antitrust-law-search-case-2024-08-05/
Longtime Google rivals like Yelp and DuckDuckGo received a huge victory Monday when a U.S. federal judge ruled that Google is an illegal monopoly. The judge has yet to decide how to restore competition, and Google’s competitors are pushing for changes they believe will help their businesses. Which might be harder than it sounds.
