As you're probably aware, the #English adjective "free" applied to software can be a bit ambiguous. It could either mean software respecting your freedoms ("#FreeSoftware"), or one that is available free of charge ("#freeware"). (Don't get me started on the assholes advertising demo or trial versions as "free software".) So, to disambiguate we sometimes use the term "libre", possibly as #FLOSS (free/libre open-source software).

Fortunately, we don't have this problem in #Polish. The "free of charge" meaning is translated into "darmowe" or "bezpłatne", while the other meaning goes as "wolne".

Well, except that "wolne" can also mean "slow". Which is fine, because I'm so tired of how fast things are moving. Let's make more "slow software".

I usually use this story of blind men describing an elephant to explain difference between #FreeSoftware and #OpenSource.

A very widespread misunderstanding equates #copyleft with #FreeSoftware and permissive licenses with #OpenSource.

In almost all practical cases you are referring to the same software.

The difference is what you focus on and this focus difference gives you different conclusions. So I focus on 4 freedoms for every user ie, copyleft Free Software.

We (open-source developers) are now in a position to decide. If you work in an organization that decides to change direction, this matters to you and your open source project.

This is why CLAs are often used as a coercive tool, not only against contributors, but also against employees of those organizations.

Uso SPHINX para as páginas das Disciplinas e comecei a usar o Nikola para a homepage/blog, mas não animei tanto com ele. Se for feito em python, é um plus.

If it wasn't for the dogmatic adherence to GNU philosophy then I would have probably pivoted to Guix already. People are that deep in their ideology that the Nonguix repository emphasize it should be used as a last resort and that the repository should not be discussed in official channels. Imagine being so free that you circle back to being overbearingly authoritarian by not letting people pick what they want to use.

Our sister organisation the @fsf has published its evaluation of the #Llama 3.1 Community
License Agreement.

This is not a #FreeSoftware (#OpenSource) license.

This is not a free software license.

It denies freedom 0: it imposes an “acceptable use policy” that prohibits a series of 25-odd uses.

Some of the uses listed in the policy are outrageous, some should be illegal, and some are already illegal in some places. There is, however, a crucial difference between prohibitions enacted by democratically controlled governments in the law and a private company dictating what we are allowed to do in our lives.

Additionally, the license excludes certain users—those whose programs or servers are very widely used. (See Sec. 2 titled “Additional Commercial Terms”). A free software license may not arbitrarily deny use of the program to anyone.

Another grave flaw in this license is that it requires a user to obey any and all laws—including trade regulations of other countries that have no way to enforce them on you in your country. This can have the effect of denying freedoms 2 and 3 in some cases. Even if a country cannot enforce its trade regulations where you live, it can ask the program's developer to sue you.
