Naomi Novik had a little novella out: The Summer War, and it turned out to be a quite satisfying read. (I had read one of her novels before: Uprooted.)So, I thought "Why not give a full-length fantasy tome a try?" To that end, I picked up the highly rated This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me, by Illona Andrews. Are any of you familiar with it? It came out this year. The author seems to have put forth significant effort into world-building and story development. I've finished: The Four Profound Weaves by R.B. LembergI was introduced to R.B. Lemberg when they were a guest on a podcast. I decided to check out her work but found that her only book available in audio was The Four Profound Weaves. It's a bit strange to enter a universe at a late stage and through a side corridor. The world feels lived in but there are allot of major events that are only referenced in passing.I loved the setting and the aging characters.I liked the fact that Lenberg isn't trying to build a past that accepts LGBTQIA characters. So many novels surround the LGBTQIA protagonist with accepting characters even if the setting is a very traditional one. Hey Fedi, I'm curious, where does the distinction between arcane n divine magic (i.e. mages and clerics) originate from? Was't DnD, or sth that predates it?A lotta fantasy staples can be traced back'a Tolkien's works, but the wizards there all had religious significance (they were Maiar, effectively low-ranking angels), so I don't think the arcane/divine dichotomy was already present there (the magic was often less concrete n more mystical anyway). But a lotta modern fantasy works, notably DnD, various RPGs n RPG-inspired anime etc. have such a distinction.
