I've finished: The Four Profound Weaves by R.B. LembergI was introduced to R.B. Lemberg when they were a guest on a podcast. I decided to check out her work but found that her only book available in audio was The Four Profound Weaves. It's a bit strange to enter a universe at a late stage and through a side corridor. The world feels lived in but there are allot of major events that are only referenced in passing.I loved the setting and the aging characters.I liked the fact that Lenberg isn't trying to build a past that accepts LGBTQIA characters. So many novels surround the LGBTQIA protagonist with accepting characters even if the setting is a very traditional one. Can't Spell "Nietzche™ Without "Nice"

When I think of "philosophy," two things come to mind. "I think, therefore I am," and an ex-friend of mine who got high off the smell of his own farts (dude calls himself a philosopher). Let's just say, I'm not really into philosophy.

So I'm pleasantly surprised that The Last Philosopher has nothing to do with the negative baggage that I associate philosophy with! Sure, you have quotes at the start of the chapters, but the story never veers into boring, pedantic territory. Far from it. This is a comedic, absurd, and flat-out fun ride!

Chapters are on the shorter side, and we bounce from POV character to POV character, but overall, I| love the vibe each chapter carried. Part of what makes the magic work is author nickfeast's prose. Some descriptions and phrases are so whimsical and ridiculous, I was smiling when I didn't expect it.

Admittedly, maybe it's because I'm reading Part Two on its own, or maybe because there are so many different POV characters and moving parts, but even though I'm not entirely sure how things are progressing, the sheer personality of the writing and the characters made it a joy to read.

So don't let the title fool you. The Last Philosopher is the furthest thing from boring, preachy, or annoying. If actual philosophy was written like this, I'd be way more into it. I can see nickfeast putting the "nice" into "Nietzche" with this one.

Title: Funny story made me go haha

Look, this story made me laugh, and that alone is worth at least 4 stars to me. Why'd it make me laugh? I'll tell you why, it's just plain witty. This is the kind of story to label accidents as ‘natural selection’. It's the kind of wit that makes you stomp and pout when it's aimed at you because it's mean and unfair, but when it's aimed at other people? You giggle because it's hilarious.

The actual story is bleh. It's carried by the wit of its prose and characters. | don't really know what's going on, | think there's a prophecy? One of the characters is trying to go east, but even he can’t remember why he wants to? Man, | don’t know. Herschel doesn't know either, and the wizard with the long name is still trying to figure out what's happening

Speaking of, the characters are as funny as the prose Lyean-whatever-the-hell-his-name-is is a massive asshole and it's funny to watch him be ajerk to others, plus he's got these different pieces of himself that chime in Disco Elysium style that only enhance the humor. Herschel kind of has that too towards the beginning, but it's played down in favor of making it L-Sorcerer's defining trait. Herschel is funny too, in a weird kind of way. Redilistically, I'd probably slap him in real life, but watching him infuriate others is funny. There's a bunch of other POV characters too, and they're mostly funny.

Anyway, read the story. It's funny.
