Bluesky To Sell Your Content To AI Data Miners
So it begins. Hidden in Jay Graber's recent charm offensive is this innocuously framed initiative: Bluesky is weighing a proposal that gives users consent over how their data is used for AI (https://techcrunch.com/2025/03/10/bluesky-is-weighing-a-proposal-that-gives-users-consent-over-how-their-data-is-used-for-ai/)
Not so fast.
1) Shows they are planning on doing content deals with AI companies.
2) Seems like it is Opt-out vs. Opt-in (see below).
3) It is just a voluntary robots.txt file

Periodically, I see people upset that #Bluesky has become the default alternative to #Twitter instead of #Mastodon. So we need to understand why that happened:
Bluesky simply has a better UI/UX for Twitter users than Mastodon because it basically is Twitter whereas Mastodon is its own thing
When the Twitter migration happened in November 2022, those who managed to get a Mastodon account found that navigating Mastodon’s unwritten social norms was difficult
Mastodon already had a pre-existing community, one that clashed with mainstream Twitter – whereas there was no community on Bluesky when Twitter users migrated there
Certain marginalized groups, such as Black folk, found a hostile environment here, and many who have stayed remain here because they believe in the tech despite the community that exists around it
I cannot understate the role that social discovery had in this. On Bluesky it is easy to find people and topics that are relevant to users whereas on Mastodon this takes a lot of heavy lifting.
That said, there’s a silver lining to this. Should Bluesky fail to decentralize and the company alienates their userbase – which is inevitable – where will Bluesky users go?
Obviously, to Mastodon.
But when that happens, we need to prepare ourselves for the eventual migration and build a better environment for Bluesky users to come here.

If you click on a link in a Bluesky post, it is now automatically redirected via the domain go.bsky.app before it actually goes to the link in the post. There is no way to stop this or know that it is happening as the redirect only flickers on the screen for a fraction of a second.
Presumably this means Bluesky can now track all link clicking on their platform, including IP addresses, destinations etc?
Or have I misunderstood?
Bluesky is spinning it as a tool for publishers to track referrals, but going beyond the spin it seems to be giving Bluesky access to people's online activity?
Bluesky introduces reply controls. This is a tough UI design as there are quite a few ways to combine restrictions. Easy to make it too complex and then no one uses it. This level of control is making its way into the fediverse as well.
Bonfire and GoToSocial both offer reply controls.
In this episode of the DotSocial podcast, recorded at the #FediverseHouse at SXSW, Bluesky CTO @pfrazee.com strapped on his butterfly wings to explain to @mike how the company is rethinking the internet’s architecture to create a more flexible, user-centric web.

Is this a bug or feature in #Bsky?
In the past I had my own self-hosted #Bluesky PDS instead of using theirs. I used my domain 'stux.me' at the time but after a while deleted the server
Now I want to create an account on their PDS and use my domain but it says the server returns another DID. Prob from my old acc
Does that mean you can make domains unuseable for Bluesky by simply creating a record on their systems for it or does this gets reset?
There was that story last month about the Turks demanding that certain opposition Bluesky accounts be silenced. They were (mostly, sort of, it’s complicated). I dug into it and came away with an essay on what we want and don’t want concerning censorship or no-censorship and how well #Bluesky and the #Fediverse might give us that: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2025/04/28/Censoring-Social-Media
Confirmation: Bluesky Now Blocking User In Turkey In Response To Turkish Demands
Yesterday Arda Kılıçdağı @arda posted (https://micro.arda.pw/@arda/114344261036182422) that #Bluesky had blocked a user in response to Turkish pressure, and published the purported notification.
Today, he confirmed the block by demonstrating that the subject account is still visible in the rest of the world, but blocked in Turkey (see below and https://micro.arda.pw/@arda/114348085466681138). Independently confirmed by @aral (https://mastodon.ar.al/@aral/114348113927295764).
The other day I finally got it. Why #Bluesky is so popular with "regular people" (aka non-techies). It's because it's CENTRALIZED (of course the Bluesky folks would never admit it out right).
One name: Bluesky.
One official URL to join / browse / post messages
One official app: "Bluesky Social" on app stores
In this post-literate society where people have been trained by commercial social media for 2 DECADES to choose the easiest, most frictionless option, of course they will pick Bluesky over the #Fediverse.
Try introducing the concept of servers / instances and names like Mastodon, Sharkey, Pleroma, GoToSocial, Friendica, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Lemmy to people not familiar with them. They'd think you're speaking a foreign language.
The Fediverse is made up of thousands of independent servers. You can't log in to https://joinmastodon.org or https://joinpeertube.org to browse Mastodon or PeerTube. Conversely, when you log into Bluesky you see messages by Bluesky members.
People need to be educated first about defederated options and their numerous advantages.
I get it now. I'm still 1000% in when it comes to the Fediverse but I understand.
And I'm tired.
And I'm posting this here on my GoToSocial account because I wanted to say my piece in one go and I would have run into Mastodon character limits.
How many people have I convinced to join the Fediverse in my 9 months advocating for it through a blog? TWO. How many people are still active on it? One.
Off I go play with LEGOs with my little one - in 12 years, when she's old enough I will set up her own instance. So Fediverse, you gotta be thriving in 2037.

New: Taking Control of Your Timeline - in Different Ways
#Fediverse platforms as well as #Bluesky offer to give the user control of their timeline - in contrast with the control that Big Tech Platforms have with their algorithmic timelines.
But the approach is surprisingly different: fediverse platforms like Mastodon give you control over *how* you see the content you follow, whereas Bluesky gives you control over *what* content you see

They may share a suffix (and a protocol), but Blacksky isn’t hitching its wagon to the Bluesky app or team. Founder and CEO @rudyfraser.com is creating a new, fiercely independent playbook for communities — one made possible because of the flexibility of the open web. 'Noteable' account verification on Bluesky uses Google Forms.
So, get this. To receive one of these blue check things on #Bluesky you need a Google account and must submit your personal information using a Google Form.
Kinda feel like asking millions of people to send you personal info over Google Forms may not be the most privacy aware or well thought out way to go.
They will never have enough data about you.
They will always ask for more.
That's how they feed the billionaires.
Leave and delete corporate social media.
Before they eat you whole.

News: Middle East Eye | #Bluesky urged to review 'punitive' policies towards Palestine content
"Social media users accuse the platform of disproportionately labelling Palestinian voices as “spam” and suspending accounts sharing footage from Israel's assaults or fundraising links..."
"...some users accused the company of "selling out" its users, while others suggested that the platform’s democratic image belied biases similar to those seen in other tech firms."
