The fediverse has no central authority — which brings both challenges and opportunities for how it's governed. For Dot Social, @mike spoke with @kissane and @darius, two of the smartest people working on this, about the impact of the 2024 U.S. Presidential election on fediverse work, the "Xodus," what needs to be done next, and how to fund and sustain better networks for humans.

The 2024 IFTAS Needs Assessment Report is Here!
We are pleased to to announce the release of the 2024 Fediverse Trust & Safety Needs Assessment Report. This annual report is a cornerstone of our mission to support the decentralised social web with evidence-based research and actionable recommendations for moderators, community managers, and administrators.
This year’s report reflects the insights of 183 services spanning platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, and Peertube, collectively hosting over 4.3 million accounts. This year we also heard from volunteer independent moderators on Bluesky. By analysing the experiences and feedback of these moderators and admins across the Fediverse, the report highlights the challenges and opportunities within this rapidly evolving ecosystem.
We will follow up with an analysis of what we’ve seen change since last year’s report, as well as key resources we think can help solve some of the needs identified.
Key Findings
Resource gaps – only 16% of communities have 24-hour moderator coverage, and nearly half of moderator teams lack formal guidance. That said, we see roughly one moderator for every 1,200 active accounts.
Top ranked priorities – moderators need tools for CSAM detection, spam prevention, and legal guidance for compliance with regulations like GDPR.
Burnout is a persistent issue – one in five moderators report experiencing trauma or burnout this year, underlining the need for wellness and resilience resources.
Financial struggles – most communities operate on donations, and overall our survey participants are not generating enough money to cover costs. Very few moderators are receiving any compensation for their labour.
IFTAS Initiatives
Informed by last year’s findings, IFTAS has developed several solutions and programs, including a Fediverse CSAM scanner, a comprehensive Moderator Handbook (coming soon), and the creation of FediCheck for automated denylist management. Moving forward, we aim to expand resources for moderator wellness, launch our CSAM scanner for broader use (please register your interest), improve tooling for non-consensual image detection, and introduce new community guidelines templates.
We encourage everyone in the Fediverse community to read the full report for a deeper understanding of the challenges facing decentralised moderation and the innovative solutions underway.
Get Involved
IFTAS thrives on collaboration. Join our community of practice at IFTAS Connect, use our resources, or support our mission with a charitable donation to help make the Fediverse a safer, more inclusive space for all.
Let’s work together to empower moderators and create a stronger, safer social web!

I'm disabling Bridgy Fed on this account (at least for now) -- if you're at risk of harassment, consider doing the same
Harassment has increased significantly on Bluesky over the last week (which tends to be what happens when a site's moderators find an excuse not to take actionn against a coordinated anti-trans harassment campaign, but that's another story). Bluesky blocklists provide some protection, but unfortunately there's no way for fedi accounts to subscribe to Bluesky blocklists or labelers. So there's basially no protection for bridged accounts.
I haven't yet hard any reports of harassment getting directed at bridged accounts ... but then again if somebody on Bluesky who hasn't opted in to Bridgy fed is spewing hate speech in bridged posts replies, we wouldn't necessarily know about it. So, better safe than sorry.
If you're currently bridging to Bluesky consider doing the same! You can disable Bridgy Fed by blocking @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy -- here's the FAQ https://fed.brid.gy/docs#opt-out
Here's the bug I just filed in the Bridgy Fed Github. https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/issues/1632
Bridgy Fed's development is very resource constrained right now; as far as I know it's still just @snarfed.org working on it part-time, and they've had their hands full just keeping up with the increased load. So, not sure how quickly they''ll be able to respond.
EDIT updated with the FAQ on how to opt-out, as well as the correct instructions.
Problems if you have a bridge with #BlueSky . #Kiwifarms have arrived. Be safe and look out for your #trans friends and family. Cancelling that bridge might be a wise move. #mods #mastodon https://masto.es/@berniethewordsmith/113651732092147916
Had some DMs wasting away in my X inbox, I'm not sure how useful it is to say it here but I don't check those.
I'm sure I've said it before, but #Mastodon remains and will remain my primary social media outlet.
I cross post occasionally to #Bluesky. If that's your thing, you can follow me here: https://bsky.app/profile/esq.social
I maintain a LinkedIn account as well: http://linkedin.com/in/aleahey/
My email is findable as well.
I'm fortunate to be on a server with good moderation practice https://thefolklore.cafe/@juergen_hubert/113647018113762419
#BlueSky obviously isn't safe for trans fam and if you are one of my contacts who bridges to BlueSky, regrettably and out of an abundance of caution, I will have to block you.
WRT #BlueSky: I know some people are getting a lot of mileage out of it, and I don't want to detract from that.
But whenever I log in after having been away for more than a couple of hours, I almost universally have to block a bot. Sometimes several. I feel like I spend more time blocking bots than interacting with humans.
And that's on top of the fact that blocking a user doesn't remove them from your followers list. At least, thankfully, they've started hiding blocked accounts on your publicly-viewable followers list, but this still artificially inflates follower counts. And there are still no polls, no way to increase max post length, etc.
Don't get me wrong, there are also some good things that Mastodon and other Fedi services could bear adopting (access controls for replies, quote boosts, etc). But still. Bots everywhere. Plus the fact that _here_ is where my posts actually get boosted, even on my other account with only 30some followers.
I'm not going to delete BlueSky, but for now, #Mastodon and the #Fediverse really are where it's at.
I was interviewed by Mozilla Firefox and talked about decentralized social media (#Fediverse and #Bluesky).

So, in our ongoing investigation into...
Who Actually Owns Bluesky?
...there is a new mystery to solve.
Three weeks ago the tech press was reporting #Bluesky was about to close a new funding round led by Bain Capital which would value it at $700M. 👀 !!!
https://www.businessinsider.com/x-competitor-bluesky-valuation-new-funding-round-2025-1
Since then, nothing. No information on whether the round closed nor who the investors are.
Anyone know anything?
Before signing up for another corporate honey trap, wouldn't you like to know who owns your future?
Hi, scientists from the Fediverse! It seems that Nature is asking people about Twitter migration and if they are happier on #bluesky .
On Nature writers' minds, Bluesky is the only place to migrate to. There's not a single mention of the Fediverse in there! However, there is a small free text box where you can write your thoughts, in the step before "send" button. So I did fill the poll anyway, writing why I decided not to go to Bluesky but to Mastodon instead.
I thought that maybe if we get enough people to actually fill the survey and mention that they migrated to Mastodon, we can make a stronger case for open, free networks. It's an extremely short survey, so let's try! https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-00037-y
This is why #Mastodon is so important:
"#NTSB forces reporters to get #planecrash updates on #X"
https://thedesk.net/2025/02/ntsb-moves-plane-crash-press-updates-x-twitter/
#Bluesky is owned by #crypto bros, it's not going to save you. The #plutocracy will call in their favors at the opportune time, and it's going to fall the same as #Twitter did. The manipulation you can't see is probably already underway
The #plutocrat strangulation of all #media is upon us
The #Fediverse is our #refuge, #sanctuary, and, grimly, perhaps our last hold out
Yeah, sure, #Bluesky is dying … but #DeerSocial and the #ATmosphere are not. 🤪 deer.social#SocialWeb

Bluesky To Sell Your Content To AI Data Miners
So it begins. Hidden in Jay Graber's recent charm offensive is this innocuously framed initiative: Bluesky is weighing a proposal that gives users consent over how their data is used for AI (https://techcrunch.com/2025/03/10/bluesky-is-weighing-a-proposal-that-gives-users-consent-over-how-their-data-is-used-for-ai/)
Not so fast.
1) Shows they are planning on doing content deals with AI companies.
2) Seems like it is Opt-out vs. Opt-in (see below).
3) It is just a voluntary robots.txt file

Periodically, I see people upset that #Bluesky has become the default alternative to #Twitter instead of #Mastodon. So we need to understand why that happened:
Bluesky simply has a better UI/UX for Twitter users than Mastodon because it basically is Twitter whereas Mastodon is its own thing
When the Twitter migration happened in November 2022, those who managed to get a Mastodon account found that navigating Mastodon’s unwritten social norms was difficult
Mastodon already had a pre-existing community, one that clashed with mainstream Twitter – whereas there was no community on Bluesky when Twitter users migrated there
Certain marginalized groups, such as Black folk, found a hostile environment here, and many who have stayed remain here because they believe in the tech despite the community that exists around it
I cannot understate the role that social discovery had in this. On Bluesky it is easy to find people and topics that are relevant to users whereas on Mastodon this takes a lot of heavy lifting.
That said, there’s a silver lining to this. Should Bluesky fail to decentralize and the company alienates their userbase – which is inevitable – where will Bluesky users go?
Obviously, to Mastodon.
But when that happens, we need to prepare ourselves for the eventual migration and build a better environment for Bluesky users to come here.
