Anyone know of a good IRC client for the #blind? I wanna use IRC.

Hey #blind people, is there any tool for pads (you know, collaboratively editing simple text documents) that’s actually screenreader accessible?

I gather that Hedgedoc and Etherpad are not accessible and at that point my list of self-hostable pad software ends. Is there anything better?

I'm so glad NVDA, Narrator, Orca, VoiceOver, TDSR, and Fenrir exist. I'm so, so glad JAWS is not the only desktop screen reader, and that FS did not persue JAWS for Mac.

I'm so glad that NVDA not only supports addons, but shows them off with the addon store! I'm so glad that NVDA is so inescapably popular that even big corporations support them, like Google Docs and Microsoft Office and countless others that say in their documentation that NVDA is supported.

I made an app for blind cubers. If you're into Rubik's cube, then Blind Cube is for you. The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and helps you add your cubes by defining the texture in each of the six stickers, solve a Rubik's cube after inputting the cube state, scramble the cube for you and gives you a timer to time your solves. It also includes a way for you to see how the cube looks like after each step of solving or scrambling the cube. I know I've used vibe coded accessibility stuff, sometimes accidentally because I didn't know it was AI assisted, other times because I was curious. *sigh*

AI assisted/Vibe coded software genuinely sucks. The quality is so poor that, to me, there is no difference in AI assisted and or vibe coded software. Even my beginning baby scripts are better than software slop. The only vibe coded thing I kinda sorta liked, until I used it more and more, was SonarPad but then I began to realize that, hey, these features? Utterly useless to me, but then there were just obviously missing things I'd think of that would have been revealed in actual testing or people actually using the fucking software they code.

I soon realized I wasn't using a quarter of the features in SonarPad so I then went back to Notepad or my fork of the Accessible Markdown text editor and haven't touched SonarPad since.

The blind community is flooded with software slop, which should say a lot about the accessibility and accessible design of developer tools. If you hate software slop by blind developers, then ask developer tool creators and developer tool maintainers why doesn't their coding IDE work better with Braille and speech?

I've finished: Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

Black Sun was a fun read, I turned to it at every listening opportunity.

The world, the magic, the amazing animals.

The only thing that troubled me was the naivete of the characters. They feel like a bunch of teens with no notion of the dangerous world they live in. I loved spending time with them, but there was almost always a dissonance between the way they talked and thought and the reality they grew up in.

The only exception was Serapio, who is both competent and aware of the world he inhabits.

He is also one of the best portrayals of a blind character I've ever read. Despite his magical powers that let him see sometimes and perform outlandish feats. He mostly uses his regular senses skillfully, without invoking super human abilities.

AND HE NEVER, EVER, ASKS TO TOUCH SOMEBODY'S FACE!

This game was developed by a developer who is not blind, but believed to have done adequate research into this. Some people did not agree and came down on them rather hard, but I saw an opportunity.

We have a new audio-based game! @ChanceyFleet came up with an #Accessible version of air hockey for the web using the touch gesture API for mobile browsers, and I just ported it over to #iOS to take advantage of the Direct Touch feature of #VoiceOver. Introducing Audio Showdown, named after the Showdown game played by #Blind folks around the world. I know blind people that willingly don't describe their images on Facebook.

I know blind people, actually, the majority of blind people, that *love* cloud based LLMs and can't stand any critique of the shitty people behind the tool, let alone the companies.

I know blind people that want TTS narrating audiobooks and audio description for everyone instead of humans.

I know blind people that sincerely believe audiobooks should *never* be used in an educational setting because Braille is better so audiobooks should *never* be used in an educational setting.

I know blind people that argue against having audio description and against accessibility because we should be fully independent.

Sighted people must understand that in the blind community especially, there's a *LOT* of blind people and even otherwise disabled people that *hate* all this “PC nonsense” PC is political correctness, but they're arguing against their own interests.

It happens in my own gay community too so instead of listening to blind people that hate other blind people, why not listen to a collective of blind people/other disabled people working to better local or digital environments.

I honestly didn't like the Against Access article when it came out, and I certainly don't like this quote being used to argue *against* access/accessibility instead of participating in an ongoing conversation about an optional filter.

Lichess has always been the most #accessible #chess website for #blind #screenreader users. You can play games there, analyze them, even do puzzles. What you can't do, though, is learn the absolute basics there.
The tutorials are not accessible, and this has been a problem for years from what I know.
I'm fixing that. I have the platform running locally, and already fixed the " collect the stars"-style tutorials so they work with screen readers. Once i'm happy with these changes I will submit a pull request upstream... let's hope they feel up to merging it once I'm done here. #lichess #accessibility #blindChess #webdev #openSource #tech

Dear blind hive mind, My parents have some old family photos they want to digitize. They are not techy so this has become a task for me. Any advice on accessible scanning software? Windows or Mac is fine. Looking for the simplest way to do this. I'm not concerned with editing the photos after they are scanned. I just want an easy, accessible way to scan a crapload of old pictures. Bonus points for tips on creating a digital photo library with easily viewable image descriptions so that I can easily find the photos I want after I'm done with all the scanning. This is interesting, but does anybody know where they could learn this? I learned print long before I lost my vision and learned Braille and I’ve never met a blind person that wanted to learn print. Does any #Blind person have resources for them?
