so I'm listening to Touch the Future, a collection of essays by a DeafBlind man, and the first essay, "Against Access", does a really good job of unpacking why I don't like hearing people describe themselves when they introduce themselves to a possibly-blind audience.
telling me about the superficial details (brown skin, white shirt, etc.) doesn't give me cultural information. are you an Arab? Maya? Samoan? Bengali? do you have locs? straight hair? curly? elegant waves? do you wear makeup, or nah? etc.
what can I do with "so-and-so is wearing a white shirt"? nothing.
