John Singer Sargent's painting Portrait of Madame X was controversial when it was first unveiled.

There is an assertion and showiness in the expanse of white skin – from her high forehead down her graceful neck, shoulders, and arms. Although the black of her dress is bold, it is also deep, recessive and mysterious.

She is surrounded by a rich brown which is at once luminous and dark enough to provide contrast to the skin tones. Most disconcerting is the whiteness of the skin, an overt contrivance of "aristocratic pallor"; by contrast her red ear is a jarring reminder of the color of flesh unadorned.

Founded today, 1994: Mosaic Communications Corporation. You're probably more familiar with their second name, though: Netscape. My first glimpse of the web in 1995.

I was fascinated by that animated N icon. It got to me the way work by Dali and Magritte did: eerie, surreal, kind of haunting, with the glowing horizon and flying meteors during pageload. (90s internet meant seeing those meteors a *lot*).

Here's to yesterday's UI design, and yesterday's web.

Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci was born #OTD in 1452.

Leonardo's notebooks are perhaps as famous as his artworks, containing sketches, diagrams, and notes on a wide range of subjects. He made significant contributions to anatomy through his detailed anatomical drawings, which were far ahead of his time. He also conducted experiments in various scientific fields, including optics and aerodynamics.
