hi peeps <3 Running a small fundraiser to keep altbot and fuzzies.wtf alive and healthy!
my server storage hit 100% full and took down basically everything. i got it fixed, but it's clear i need more drives before it happens again.
altbot is free, open source, and runs 24/7 generating alt text for anyone on the fediverse who needs it. it's real accessibility infrastructure and i want to keep free.
goal is $500 for a set of used (and tested for good health) enterprise drives off ebay. every little bit helps get there!

First shot at making a small wooden box, this for a 4-CD blues/gospel mix I intend to give as a gift to someone who still enjoys the format.
Joints are mitred and pinned as can be seen if you look closely.

It's okay, you don't have to overthink it! Write how you'd describe the image to a friend over the phone.

Virginia is my homeland and I get to bring a little piece of it back to Florida with me. My parents had me while they were students at Virginia Tech, just 45 mins away from where the conference was held.
As fun as it had been to access #clay so easily in the environment here, it’s only possible because about a foot of top soil has been lost to farming, deforestation, etc. Also, the labor of the enslaved is baked into each clay brick in the buildings on Hollins campus. (Lots of #alttext.)
Did I dream that Mastodon introduced the ability to add alt-text to profile pics and banners in the profile settings? Doesn't appear to be an option for me. #Mastodon #alttext

I was wondering if you have looked into an option where #AltText, or perhaps the first two or three lines of it, just always appears like a caption below images that have it, instead of the indicator icon?
Two reasons:
1. Sometimes the alt text indicator icon obscures a detail of the image I’d like to see.
2. Some alt text descriptions are actually just sheer poetry or otherwise interesting enough in their own right that I’d like to read them even if I have full visibility of the actual image. Showing the first few words (and some indicator of alt text length?) always would give me some odds of being able to tell when this is the case.

Who wants to spend a $5 on fancy padlock shims, when you can make shitty ones for the price of a soda can (and maybe a finger or two)?
Today, I'm going to teach y'all how to turn a soda can into like 6 disposable padlock shims.
⚠️ Soda cans are razor sharp on the cut edges, please be careful; your fingers will thank you 🫶
1. To start, get yourself an empty can of soda, beer, energy drink, etc.
2. Using some scissors you don't care about, cut the top and bottom off along the bevel. You should now have a tube that is open at both ends.
3. Cut the tube down one side and flatten it out into a rectangle, then cut it into 2.5" x 1" strips.
4. Take a strip and (with a marker) divide it into a 4x4 grid.
5. Then cut an "M" shape out of the bottom half of the 2.5" x 1" rectangle.
6. Fold the top ¼ of the rectangle down.
7. Fold the legs of the "M" up and over the top on each side.
8. Shape the shim around a lock shackle.
9. Shim something.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you're yelling at a person on Fedi for not using #AltText, stop. Please.
Should you use alt-text? Yes!
Should you boost posts without alt-text? No!
Should you yell at companies and bots who don't use alt-text? Fuck yeah!
Should you try your best to make Fedi a more accessible, and safe place for everyone—including those who have trouble writing alt-text? Of course.
Should you mention @altbot or #Alt4Me *occasionally* so folx know they're both wonderful tools that can help make Fedi a more inclusive place? It would be impolite not to.
But—and let me make this clear—don't be a dick to folx who forget alt-text, or who have trouble writing it for whatever reason; it's not very punk of you.

I've been communicating with a person on the #Mastodon team about some #Accessibility stuff related to #AltText and I am loving their communication style. Confirms everything, so nothing is misunderstood, but not in a defensive way. I wish I could say more, but I am excited for the 5.0 release! I believe the team is shifting to a more community based approach which I really like. I've been here for many, many, many, years, and I am really loving this more intersectional development approach the team appears to be striving for.
