Really nice touch for alt text on Phanpy. As your mouse hovers over an image, the corresponding alt text is highlighted below.
alttext
I love seeing comics on Mastodon in languages that I don't properly speak, and still being able to understand them because people added alt text that can be translated.
(Protip: @phanpy comes with a built-in "translate alt text" button.)
Adding alt text to your images in posts isn’t only showing solidarity for visually impaired followers, it also helps people discover your posts.
For example, if they are searching a word or phrase that happens to be in your image description.

Mastodon.social alt text analysis report! 🧐
Me and my friend Cristal just published a report on image description usage on mastodon.social, as a group project for the Introduction to Data Science course of the Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Societies Erasmus Mundus Joint Master program.
Thoughts and feedback are welcome 💕
A huge thanks to @stefan for publishing the dataset on which we based our analysis!
NOTE: We are absolutely aware that the report has very little actual relevance, as the dataset contains a super limited amount of posts from one instance only. It was mainly an experimentation to test our data analysis skills.

Weiterhin gilt bei mir, kein Boost und kein Reply auf Bilder ohne #Bildbeschreibung.
Furthermore, no boost and no reply to pictures without #AltText.
Kleine Erinnerung
I WILL NOT repost things here if they don't have image descriptions.
I end up adding the description myself, and frankly I pass over MANY posts that I would have quickly shared but I don't have the time to be everyone's mom and describe everything. (I just do that for the really great posts I can't pass up.)
Please, put #alttext on your images! It will make you more popular. It's polite. It makes your posts higher quality and easier to understand. It's cool. Just describe the images.
Right.
*edit: forgot that #AltText, sorry kids

If you have, or run an account on mastodon that posts pictures with no Alt tags or Text:
Please don't send me a follow request because it won't be accepted.
Thank you.
America…
Love ya & all, but no.
No way.
Brothers and sisters don’t get married.
In @IceCubesApp könnt ihr übrigens unter Einstellungen / Inhalte „Alternativtext ist erforderlich“ einschalten. Dann lässt die App euch keine Bilder mehr ohne #alttext tooten
As someone who is totally blind, the Fediverse is the only place where I have ever been able to follow people such as photographers, artists, or even those who post pictures of their cats or the food they ate. The reason is that most of them use alt text. They take the time to describe the images that my screen reader can't recognise. Some write the descriptions themselves, and others use tools such as altbot. Some worry that their descriptions aren't good enough, especially when they are new at this. Let me assure you, not only are they good enough, they are extremely appreciated! If the rest of the world thought as you did, it would be a much better place. Don't hesitate to ask if you're unsure of something, but never think that we don't notice your effort.

Interesting series of blog posts by @dries :
- "Comparing local large language models for alt-text generation" https://dri.es/comparing-local-llms-for-alt-text-generation - both GPT-4o & Claude 3.5 Sonnet = Grade A
- "Automating alt-text generation with AI" https://dri.es/automating-alt-text-generation-ai - uses @simon llm tool

Being a potter means drawing from a vocabulary of tried-and-true forms: mugs, teapots, bowls, pitchers, etc. However, these archetypal forms have European & Asian origins.
I thought it would be interesting to everyone & affirming to other Black ceramicists to reference #African forms in contemporary tableware. The combining of European, Asian and African ceramics traditions goes back to mid-20th century, but that history is omitted from US #ceramic education. See #alttext for details. #pottery
Today's #MothOfTheDay is a nationally scarce micro #moth. But one did visit the moth box Friday night. If you see spindle covered in massive webs, it is likely to be a common, indeterminate form of yponomeuta spindle ermine. This one, with grey suffusion, however, is not common at all:

🚀 Mastodon Alt-Text generator
Important improvements to the script! 📸
1️⃣ Replaced status and media_ids[] with a more robust update function.
2️⃣ Improved HTML tag handling with smart cleaning to preserve line breaks.
3️⃣ Added an infinite loop with a 60s delay to continuously analyze images in posts.
4️⃣ Enhanced error handling, with specific exceptions for redirects and other request issues.

Since I wiped my IG, there’s no way for people to see my progress over the years. I’m thinking about adding a gallery of past work to my website to remedy this. 1st photo shows work from 2017, 2nd photo shows work from 2024.
I started making #pottery in 2013 at age 34. I knew nothing of handmade #ceramics or the history behind it and had to self-educate. After over a decade studying historical pottery & natural materials, my pieces have become living cultural artifacts. #alttext for details.
I feel like I'm seeing less and less #alttext on images that cross my timeline, and it's not good, y'all. Please don't exclude our visually impaired friends. Thanks!
Some of the messaging around alt text is about how easy it is. Like there was a button marked “accessible” and some people simply failed to push it out of laziness, or spite.
I put alt text on every picture I post, not because it’s easy, but because I believe it helps. It isn’t a lot of work, but it is work.
Sometimes we get overzealous, and imply (or say) that making the Fediverse accessible is basically free. That therefore something is wrong with you if you don’t do it. Those messages never sat quite right with me. I’m proud of how much alt text there is around here, but we could do much, much better; we won’t get there by gaslighting people about what it will take to do so.
I encourage you to put alt text on your pictures. I won’t tell you that it’s not work. What I will say is that making the Fediverse more accessible and inclusive is a good use of your time and energy.
Let’s get to work.
Retro project.
First shot at making a small wooden box, this for a 4-CD blues/gospel mix I intend to give as a gift to someone who still enjoys the format.
Joints are mitred and pinned as can be seen if you look closely.
CD working title: 'Blues & Pews'
(See replies for further developments & stay tuned; I'll post the playlist on completion. After that: a series on my fave 'fuck corporate waste' project'.)
Finding it too hard to describe images you're posting online?
It's okay, you don't have to overthink it! Write how you'd describe the image to a friend over the phone.
Still having trouble? Tag your post with the "Alt4Me" hashtag, and someone will be happy to help you out!
Virginia is my homeland and I get to bring a little piece of it back to Florida with me. My parents had me while they were students at Virginia Tech, just 45 mins away from where the conference was held.
As fun as it had been to access #clay so easily in the environment here, it’s only possible because about a foot of top soil has been lost to farming, deforestation, etc. Also, the labor of the enslaved is baked into each clay brick in the buildings on Hollins campus. (Lots of #alttext.)
