xlibre
A modern implementation inspired by the classic NeXTSTEP desktop. It's interesting to see how its design and workflow still feel relevant decades later.
Definitely a fun project to explore.

Looks like the maintainers of xlibre packages in the FreeBSD 15.0 did a great work
I was able to switch from Xorg to XLibre with just two commands and without any issues, lol
https://eugene-andrienko.com/it/2026/01/22/freebsd-15-0-xlibre.html
Worth to mention, that any of my tricks described in the previous blogpost (https://eugene-andrienko.com/it/2025/07/24/x11-configuration-simple.html) are working too without any problems.
GhostBSD is going to abandon Xorg after 15 years. Eric Turgeon explains why GhostBSD switched from Xorg to XLibre instead of Wayland.

Maybe I should switch to GhostBSD 🤔

tl;dr: More people are needed to keep the project alive

The release of #GhostBSD 26.1 with #XLibre is approaching.
Together, we fixed a bug in the X configuration. Now we're looking for testers of the latest ISO https://ci.ghostbsd.org/jenkins/job/stable-15/job/Build%20ISO%20For%20Testing%20Packages in VMware, KVM, and bhyve. Please report the results back at https://forums.ghostbsd.org/d/796-ghostbsd-261-r150p2-testing-help-needed/7.
We released the #XLibre Xserver 25.0.0.22 and 25.1.4 on Apr 21 containing #security fixes for CVE-2026-33999, CVE-2026-34000, CVE-2026-34001, CVE-2026-34002, and CVE-2026-34003 of the X.Org Server. We recommend everyone update ASAP. #CVE https://github.com/X11Libre/xserver/releases/tag/xlibre-xserver-25.1.4
We like to say thank you to those who share their #LiberatedScreens. To those who provide feedback on running #XLibre. Be it positive or things to help us grow. Thank you too to those preferring other display servers and still supporting the freedom of choice. Much appreciated!
Bob Scheifler announces the first release of the X Window System:
"I stole a fair amount of code from W ... and called it X."
Forty-two years later, I'm still running X11 daily on Slackware.
Happy Birthday, X.

Today, the Sun reaches its turning point and sets the schedule for the #XLibre 25.2 series beta. In 25.2.0 we fixed DRI 1.4 detection, improved the Nvidia support, Kdrive X servers, modesetting, and more. June 5, 2026, marks #XLibre's first anniversary. We're thrilled and will share this with you for a week. Accordingly, we released our first stable version 25.1.6. Over the next few days, we’ll be introducing its features and expressing our heartfelt thanks. Stay tuned!
Thanks to Patrick Volkerding for making the packages available for testing, and to the XLibre developers for their work.
Looking forward to seeing how the project evolves.

Option "DontZap" "True" prevents Ctrl+Alt+Backspace from
terminating X.
Option "DontVTSwitch" "True" prevents switching to another virtual
terminal, but removes an important recovery path.
For most personal systems, DontZap alone is the balanced choice.
DontVTSwitch may make sense for kiosks or systems with stricter
physical-access requirements.
