I noticed that #XLibre got built in #FreeBSD #ports so I thought why not try it in a VM. Turns out it is just list you would do install xorg, a few stantard #pkg commands and it just runs !

Trying out NextSpace on Slackware -current with XLibre.

A modern implementation inspired by the classic NeXTSTEP desktop. It's interesting to see how its design and workflow still feel relevant decades later.

Definitely a fun project to explore.

Looks like the maintainers of xlibre packages in the FreeBSD 15.0 did a great work

I was able to switch from Xorg to XLibre with just two commands and without any issues, lol

Eric Turgeon is also writing about what the project needs to do to survive, and the problems with fatigue, as well as the lack of development from MATE and his thoughts/reluctance about needing to code in Objective C for the Gershwin DE, which could be the future environment for the project.

Today, the Sun reaches its turning point and sets the schedule for the #XLibre 25.2 series beta. In 25.2.0 we fixed DRI 1.4 detection, improved the Nvidia support, Kdrive X servers, modesetting, and more. This qxl video driver issue with #FreeBSD #QEMU VM appeared more interesting than I thought: in another boot environment #BE where I installed #Xlibre instead of #Xorg, using #qxl driver and startx in a #TTY brought up a bare X session with a #Xterm. Quitting the xterm instance successfully terminated X session and brought back TTY session, while on #Xorg quitting the session resulted in a full black screen, no tty. Switching ttys from with QEMU's sendkey failed to get any tty bacl either. If a window manager like #CWM was launched by startx, however, both Xlibre and Xorg failed with a #SegmentFault error. 2/n

terminating X.

For most personal systems, DontZap alone is the balanced choice.
