OK Not that I have anything against #OpenBSD but I'm going to install #FreeBSD 15.0 onto my #ThinkPad again as I do miss ZFS and the extensive #Wayland selection of apps too. Ok I miss full color emoji in the terminal too you got me. But I do still have OpenBSD running on my Dell Optiplex 3080 Tower so I can keep up with developments as I do still like what it is and what they stand for. I guess I'm just a #BSD girl and I like them all. #RunBSD

For #GNOME 50 X11 session was finally removed, making #Wayland the only available session.

This opened doors for many clean-ups and improvements, with more in the future! Thank you for everyone involved♥️

#Mastodon tip: There is a way to use only part of a word as a hashtag!

For example, you might want to say the word “toots”, but use the hashtag “toot”.

To do this, place a U+2060 WORD JOINER before the “s” in “toots”. Example: #toot⁠s.

If you're using #X11 or #Wayland (i.e. #Linux or #BSD desktop), you can add the following line to ~/.XCompose to give yourself a keyboard shortcut:

<Multi_key> <w> <j> : "⁠" U2060 # WORD JOINER

Then just type Compose, then W, then J.

Currently working on squeeze titlebars.

This is something which some people wanted in fvwm, and it actually comes from #ctwm, whereby the titlebar was squeezed to its length so it didn't take up the whole width of the window.

Wayland doesn't have any shape support (a la XShape extension) so doing this manually is tricky.

Anyway, screenshot attached of what squeezed titlebars will look like in CoW. Options for left, centre, or right aligned.

I'm thinking of re-installing FreeBSD on my Thinkpad T480s (Intel iGPU) and exploring Sway as my Wayland compositor. What is the state of Wayland support in FreeBSD?

Could your recommend a source of good wallpapers? or some particular cool ones?

Usually, I have plain gray background and light high contrast color schemes in terminal, browser and text editor. I want to experiment with transparency and (probably) dark color scheme, as light doesn't play well with opacity.

My first attempt: it looks nice-ish, but I feel much more strain on the eyes. Maybe I can workaround with better #wallpaper?

Neat #MangoWM has added a dwindle layout in the git version.

The Dwindle layout arranges windows as a binary tree of recursive splits. Each new window splits the focused window's container, producing a spiral-like tiling.

Oh yeah I have a nice Italian beer in my hand and just noticed my #OpenBSD -current desktop has lots of package updates. So now I even have gammastep installed and running nicely on my #MangoWM #Wayland setup. ❤️

I made some progress on solving my graphics issues for #Electron apps on #Flatpak in #Debian 13 with #GNOME and #Wayland on my 2011 #iMac 27-inch:

For Spotify, turning off GPU acceleration in Flatseal

For Signal, copy the contents of the .desktop file into a new .desktop file in the local directory where those go, and modify the exec line to add --disable-gpu

I'm not sure if I want to "fix" Slack because the "app" won't allow me to choose a browser with which to open links. It defaults to the system's default browser, which isn't what I use for the day job.

Note: All of these problems also go away in an X11 session, but that breaks suspend/resume on this iMac, so I'm committed to staying in Wayland.

More details when I do a post on this.

Hello all. Here's a few minor updates since I last posted:

* Output management improvements. Now, when, monitors are turned off, or one switches to a VT and back again, window positions are restored correctly. This is controlled by `set preserve_desk_on_output_loss` which defaults to true. Setting this to `false` will use the first available output and desk and mash all windows onto that.

* A new `desk-name` command to rename and limit the number of desks per output. There's also a `desks.count` setting to control the minimum number of desks.

Plus a few bug-fixes.

Since my last post, I've not had an offer to help overhaul the default config. That's OK -- but I admit, a pity as well.

Looking at various Window managers for River and Rhine certainly does look interesting to me and it's written in Zig too. I did think about trying kwm as that seems popular but Rhine seems to allow more script-able control over the WM which I like.

Just quickly ran up @thomasadam Compositor on Wayland -- a stacking window manager using river as the compositor. CoW aims to behave like fvwm and mwm from X11.
Obviously to see what it's all about and if I could even go back to a stacking window manager.

PS: I have not yet customised the theme it's the out of the box theme.

Finally added the #wayland screen recorder wf-recorder to my tools list that allows selection of areas using slurp. This will be useful for recording bugs as they happen and maybe the odd show off desktop in action? 😉

OK! Only forty-four respondents but still enough to give me some general picture of the roughly even balance between #X11 and #Wayland and the relative slightness of other options. And I learned about #tmux for multiplexing console terminal sessions so that's good!

Woohoo! #Cow ( #fvwm #wayland alternative ) now supports RGBA colors aka transparency! Excuse the dodgy screenshot but you already get the idea. 😉

I've a dumb question to ask #fvwm users past and present. Currently I'm setting up my #cow ( #fvwm for #Wayland ) and have never really used fvwm. I'm going to set up my pager and possibly some buttons plus a few scripts. Now comes the question.
What do you do with those windows ?
Do you put them in a reserved area that other windows can't overlap? Or do you position them with a rule and just treat them like normal windows so other windows could effectively be on top of them when maximized, meaning you'd have to raise your pager or buttons again to see them?
I did warn you it's a dumb question but thanks in advance for your explanations of how you run fvwm and bonus points for your screenshots. ❤️

Nice that's the first time I've upgraded my system using pkgbase and it's gone from FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p1 to FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p2 without issue.
Oh and why yes I'm still using CoW ( Wayland and behaves like fvwm by @thomasadam ) as my Window manager and loving it's many many configurations. This could take me a wee while to get just how I'd like but definitely loving that retro vibe!
