Target has seen plummeting share prices and decreased footfall after consumers started to boycott the chain because of its backdown on diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Now, the church leader who has spearheaded the boycott has a new target: Dollar General. Jamal-Harrison Bryant, senior pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, Georgia, says the low-cost chain has both rolled back its DEI initiatives and failed to invest in the Black and low-income communities that are the backbone of its customer base. This time, he's not calling for all customers to stay away from Dollar General, since because of the lack of infrastructure in rural communities it's sometimes the only place people can shop for certain items. Instead, he's proposing an electronic protest: Clog up phone lines and inboxes, and post on social media to pressure the company into reinstating its programs — and boycott the store if you can. Here's more from @USAToday.

"Health Secretary #RFKJr says his “Make America Healthy Again” Commission report harnesses “gold-standard” science, citing more than 500 studies and other sources to back up its claims. Those citations, though, are rife with errors, from broken links to misstated conclusions. Seven of the cited sources don’t appear to exist at all."

Senator Kennedy spends his time during the hearing on crypto legislation demanding that law prof Richard Painter apologize to Senator Gillibrand for tweeting that she accepted $217,000 in crypto industry money, then attacks Painter as a "whackjob" after he says Kennedy should focus on the bill.
Framing is everything.
"You can keep your healthcare" is often listed as a "major lie" of "Obamacare" (they call it the ACA when they use it themselves)
The reason many people lost their "healthcare" is those plans were either completely destroyed by the ACA's offering beating it out, or just plain not actually qualifying as 'healthcare' under the new rules
People were mad the ACA exposed their plans as a scam
"Never Pay" plan from Monty Python
A couple people responded to my earlier post about the shoddy WSJ article (https://hachyderm.io/@molly0xfff/114683662588184161) to say “well it’s true that Democrats aren’t supporting the protests!”
At my best count, 75 elected Democrats (Congresspeople, governors) attended protests today. Another 27 encouraged people to go.
That’s just looking at today’s protests, not Democrats talking about or attending protests more generally. It also doesn’t count the many more state or local officials who showed up, candidates, etc.
The #NoKings #protests by millions were a stark contrast to Trump's military parade in DC.
But a scholar who studies mass protests points out that protests can serve as a pretext for a nascent autocrat to further undermine democratic practices and institutions.

The Justice Department said earlier this week that Jeffrey Epstein did not maintain a client list. Here's Mother Jones' story from 2020 on what happened when journalist Leland Nally called every number in the disgraced financier's little black book, which has been circulating since 2009, when a former butler tried to sell it to lawyers representing Epstein's victims.
It's no coincidence that the Fairshake crypto super PAC has timed its press release announcing they have $140 million ready for the midterms as Congress is considering three crypto bills during "Crypto Week". Pass our bills, or we will spend millions against you in the midterms.
The Minnesota shooter who killed state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband wasn’t a lone wolf, insists a scholar of political violence and extremism.
Violent extremists are almost always part of broader networks. The myth of the isolated madman obscures the networked reality of far-right violence and makes it harder to prevent the next attack.

A couple of years ago I wrote a tweet thread about how I'd begun to see people in the crypto and finreg spaces expressing excitement about the traceability of cryptocurrencies.
Thinking back to it as I watch Senators and crypto industry executives talk about how delightfully traceable public blockchains are. No pesky warrant required!

Newsletter: Issue 86 – State power sponsored by Coinbase
Coinbase’s sponsorship of Trump’s military parade angered some in the crypto world, who described the move as “deeply disturbing” and “an insult to everything our industry stands for”. But this is only the latest example of crypto companies aligning with state power.
Earlier this month, the cryptocurrency firm Ripple made a $9.4 million contribution to the San Francisco Police Department to fund a surveillance center outfitted with drones. “We’re going to be covering the entire city with drones,” enthused a SFPD Captain about the donation.
Newsletter: Crypto firms hope putting a blockchain veneer on traditional equities will allow them to sidestep lessons learned in the 1929 Wall Street crash, crypto firms look to become banks, and Congress celebrates crypto surveillance while claiming to outlaw it
The new #SupermanMovie is reminding audiences that #Superman was a refugee — and that his story calls for patriotism, not nationalism.
What’s the difference?
🇺🇸 Patriotism means love of country and its ideals.
🇺🇸 Nationalism means loyalty to just one group, often at others’ expense.
