Near infinite supply of green onions. Harvest by cutting off above the bulb and it will regrow. These are all originally from grocery store bought onions. If you are frugal and flexible in your diet (ie not a picky eater), you can just use these like normal onions, too. I have way more of these than we use. #gardening

Clearing out all the past-their-prime zinnias from the front garden bed yesterday and this giant swallowtail showed up and hung around the lantana long enough for me to go grab my camera.

1. Made a pot of Pumpkin Soup for dinner tonight. New recipe for me and it turned out delicious.

2. My husband and I went on a pruning rampage in the gardens in preparation for winter.

3. There are still flowers blooming in our yard, so I salvaged what I could after the pruning and plopped them in our handmade vases. (photos attached)

I am a master of my craft. If you're looking for a plant list. Here's what I've taken with me after a lifetime of study and work
Cool: Lentils, Fava beans, Swiss chard, Kale, Spinach.
Warm: Amaranth, Sunflower, Seminole pumpkin, Scarlet runner beans.
Other: Blackberry, Mulberry, Fig, Hazelnut, Alpine strawberry.
Rotate to taste.
This is for whatever the climate zone is in Alabama for the year 2024. Assume it will not be the same for long and adapt accordingly.

Working on a pair of #compost crocks (among other things) to hopefully be fired by the end of the month. We’ve outgrown our old one so one of these will be the replacement. They each hold somewhere around a gallon/4L. The double handles make them easy to carry & dump, and the lids fit snuggly. They’re sturdy pieces of functional ware, which also serve as decorative objects when not in use. Cooking #compost. I turned the pile on Sunday and today it reached 130°F, supposedly the lowest ideal temperature for efficient decomposition and to kill weed seeds and soil pathogens.

Heat from composting can be harvested as renewable, sustainable energy. I get really frustrated by the sheer number of #EnvironmentalSolutions ppl have come up with that just aren’t implemented. Imagine a world where we use our food scraps to grow more food AND generate clean energy.

Thursday Things

My winter indoor garden really helps cheer and 'ground' (!) me. We get dwarf Bok Choy, mustards, arugula and mini lettuces to supplement our salads of raw local red and green cabbage, carrots, apples and home baked beans Just seeing the growth and tending to the seedlings and growing plants, then snipping the leaves when they're ready helps defeat the winter blues. I have to try to pace the sowings so that the harvests don't all come at once.
