I just need to take a moment to say how absolutely marvellous you lot are.<br><br>Day after day after day I pop onto my feed and discover a world of joy, kindness, beauty, wisdom and insight. I learn about ant farms, whittling wood, sunsets in the Baltic, bees in Bavaria, film baths in Bath, pottery in Portland, and just loads more.<br><br>I get to see all the things that make you smile, and that makes me smile too. I get to see what matters to you folks. <p>What worked at 100 users broke at 5,000</p><p>Recent events have made me realise something.</p><p>In the early days, when PieFed was tiny (it’s still tiny I guess) me being really engaged with the community was a huge strength. I knew immediately what was going on and could release a fix/change really fast and people loved that. In contrast it made the other projects and their devs seem slow and distant.</p><p>It worked great. For quite a while.</p><p>But now PieFed has thousands of users and there are haters and there are bugs and there are feature requests, etc etc and now what used to be a strength has become a danger and a weakness. Me jumping onto every issue and responding every time someone @ rimu’s me drags me into stuff, destroys my focus and leaves me on the verge of burnout. If people can troll me into behaving erratically (they can!) then it stalls my work and when I behave badly it makes the whole project look bad.</p><p>Now I understand why larger projects’ devs keep some distance. It’s the only way to keep working while the storm rages outside.</p><p>It looks like I’m going to have to put in some insulating layers between me and the wider fediverse. Defined communication channels for feature requests, places to report bugs, delegate to others some/more of the community management, put together a FAQ and more docs, and so on.</p><p>There will have to be some debates, issues and conspiracy theories that are left alone and not debunked by me personally. Internet chatter is just not something I can be putting as much time into as I used to. Realistically that point was passed months ago but I lacked the experience needed to spot it at the time. </p><p>Although unpleasant for me personally this growth is a good problem for PieFed to have. <p>A quick overview of the asterisms in the LettError fonts. All new titles have have the symbol and I will add them to older ones when useful. I prefer the asterisk with 5 strokes. For LTR Very Bauble the bottom asterisks are rotated inward to create the triangular counter. This is a pretty illusion. For CT Action Grotesque the legibility at 7pt was more important. It is a complex shape and I want to it do its job at scale. By moving the bottom asterisks outward, they create some room for the top asterisk. The whole symbol becomes a bit wider, especially in the heavier weights. <p>After Bluesky, Threads, and so on, the whole <a href="/tags/wsocial/" rel="tag">#WSocial</a> thing is another reminder that it was never about the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a> being &quot;too complicated&quot; or &quot;just for nerds&quot;.</p><p>A bafflingly large amount of people genuinely only act on a gut feeling telling them that only commercial products with fancy marketing owned by a for-profit corporation can be trustworthy, &#x27;official&#x27; and &#x27;legal&#x27;, for the lack of a better word.</p><p>If something is a commercial offering by a competent-looking, rich family man in a suit, it&#x27;s clearly an official, legal, trustworthy product. You can be proud of using such a fancy-looking service.</p><p>When they see a community-run open-source project or a grassroots initiative, their first instinct is that it must be shady, illegal, complicated, broken or predatory in some way. It&#x27;s probably some aftermarket grey area bootleg made by weird tech nerds, political groups with an ulterior motive, conspiracy theorists or some naive teenage hackers. They&#x27;d also be embarrassed for using it in front of their peers and neighbours; who uses some free back-alley software, are you poor or something?</p><p>The same people are the reason why Google is using the word &#x27;sideloading&#x27;, why scammers love wearing fancy suits, why people suddenly act childishly helpless in front of LibreOffice, or why DIY HRT is so demonised.</p><p>They trust any kind of &#x27;official approval&#x27; over their own senses. If someone does something that isn&#x27;t &#x27;approved&#x27;, they&#x27;re a bad person or clearly endangering themselves and others. No idea why exactly, but psh, it must be wrong somehow, or everyone would do it, right?</p><p>If people on the Fediverse understood that the whole &quot;it&#x27;s all so complicated and clunky&quot; thing is just a thinly veiled excuse for a general disdain for non-commercial software, we could finally stop making all our software imitate their corporate equivalents in a futile attempt to appease people who never gave us a chance in the first place.</p><p>You&#x27;ll never convince them to treat it in good faith no matter how much effort or money you put into UX or &#x27;ease of use&#x27;. All you&#x27;re doing is making the software worse, e. g. through things like dot-social, verified accounts or begging brands, corporations and politicians to join and give your product some kind of &#x27;official&#x27; validation.</p><p><a href="/tags/mastodon/" rel="tag">#mastodon</a> <a href="/tags/opensource/" rel="tag">#openSource</a> <a href="/tags/linux/" rel="tag">#linux</a></p>
