Use locally installed fonts in the LaTeX Docker container by mounting your fonts directory to /usr/local/share/fonts, e.g.

docker --volume=/usr/share/fonts:/usr/local/share/fonts pandoc/latex …

Should work with XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX PDF engines as well as with the "typst" container.

I am not a web designer. I was, at one point, a pretty good web admin. I know mostly server back end stuff from before things like NodeJS took off. I know some PHP and CSS and I am very comfortable with a WHM Cpanel server.

I say all of this to say, when I make websites I use templates. (Usually free, some paid) and I have recently started going to all of the sites I own and manage and working to ensure they don't have google fonts. This is just another way google is tracking who is doing what when they have no business doing so.

so I implore you web people of the world, DITCH THE GOOGLE FONTS!

A quick overview of the asterisms in the LettError fonts. All new titles have have the symbol and I will add them to older ones when useful. I prefer the asterisk with 5 strokes. For LTR Very Bauble the bottom asterisks are rotated inward to create the triangular counter. This is a pretty illusion. For CT Action Grotesque the legibility at 7pt was more important. It is a complex shape and I want to it do its job at scale. By moving the bottom asterisks outward, they create some room for the top asterisk. The whole symbol becomes a bit wider, especially in the heavier weights. I spent some time debugging a font rendering issue after recent fontconfig changes on Linux.

At first I thought fontconfig itself was "broken", but after testing multiple setups I realized the issue was mostly related to how Iosevka behaved with the newer font matching/rendering changes.

The funny part is that this ended up helping me discover a new font family:

the rendering and spacing ended up being MUCH better for my workflow, especially the "Term" variant.

Sometimes a small issue sends you in the right direction 🙂

I liked it so much that I already prepared and submitted a SlackBuild.

Huge thanks to the developers working on fontconfig and font rendering. People usually only notice this work when something changes, but good typography and font matching matter a lot on a daily desktop system.

Nice, with a great help of https://www.programmingfonts.org/ (URL was found in the lost toot of one fedizen), I finally found the ideal font which I was searching a lot — a monospace Serif font, which looks like font from a book!

A Monaspace Xenon font and a Monaspace Radon font (the last is hand-writing like monospace font). Luckily, the support of Cyrillic symbols was added in the latest version of font, literally few weeks ago.

Finally, my desktop is closer to the mine ideal
