I was really excited for the #Fediverse in 2024 and I think that feeling has borne out. Projects have released or started in earnest but so did the influenze of facebook, a long-term genocide and queer violence supporter who have this week changed their terms to expressly permit queerphobic and other vicious harms.

Unlike Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media sites, which are all closed “walled gardens” owned by billionaire tech bros like Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, the Fediverse celebrates decentralized services which anybody could host. This is similar to how email works, where users can select which email server and service to host their mailbox on, even one they host in their own home.

Die Petition endete im Januar 2025 mit mehr als 2.000 Unterschriften und gut 300 Kommentaren zu unserem Appell. Wir werden die Sammlung am 15.1.25 im Berliner Büro der Hochschulrektorenkonferenz übergeben.
Wir freuen uns, dass inzwischen viele #Hochschulen in Deutschland ihre Accounts auf X stillgelegt und begonnen haben bei #Mastodon zu posten. Es gibt auch erste Ansätze, dass an Hochschulen mit dem Aufbau eigener #Fediverse-Instanzen/Server begonnen wird. Alles sind wichtige Schritte hin zu einer europäischen Souveränität bei sozialen Netzwerken, deren Notwendigkeit seit der US-Wahl immer klarer erkannt wird. Die jüngsten Entwicklungen bei den großen Plattformen X und Meta zeigen, wie wichtig eine dezentrale föderierte Governance für ein gutes Soziales Miteinander sind.

Wir danken allen Unterzeichner:innen für ihre Unterstützung und hoffen auf weitere Mitwirkung bei #UnisInsFediverse. Über den Fortgang der Kampagne werden wir hier weiterhin berichten.

I just received Testflight invitation for @surf application. And discovered that VoiceOver, assistive tech for blind people, does not read anything. Just says "bottom sheet" twice, and the app's name, then NOTHING. I hope they fix this mess, because this all means cutting blind people off. I won't keep silent in front of yet another accessibility issue. #ableism #accessibility #blind #inclusion #disability #voiceover #fediverse
