On Thursday, @gyptazy provided a talk about #BoxyBSD at the "Virtualization Gathering" at @credativde.
@gyptazy provided some more information about the BoxyBSD project, but also about the history and infrastructure including the switches of #FreeBSD #Jails, #bhyve and #Proxmox (#kvm). Afterwards, additional information about the #Sylve project were shared and why this is so important and interesting and could make BoxyBSD return to bhyve based #virtualization.

Could I use FreeBSD to provide small-scale VPS hosting in a multi-tenancy setup? It doesn't need to be fancy, power user skills could be assumed, but things would need to be properly isolated from each other. Minimal features would be providing console access and power on/power off/reboot features.
Nice to have is uploading and mounting your own ISO.
When I previously asked a similar question at illumos Cafe, the answer was Triton Datacenter. As far as I can tell, FreeBSD doesn't have anything close to that. I've looked for VPS hosting providers that run FreeBSD underneath but haven't found a lot. Even FreeBSD-focused companies usually turn out to use Xen underneath. The closest thing is probably OpenBSD Amsterdam, which is of course not FreeBSD.
If you want to use #Ghost and you want to support a European small business hosting service that hosts Ghost and has excellent support, Magic Pages has launched a new lifetime hosting plan. For $460 (not sure about EUR price) you get a Ghost site hosted forever.
They’re an Austrian business using German servers (Hetzner).
They also have a monthly plan and an enterprise plan.
Recently I got asked about my @BoxyBSD project, which offers free VPS instances of vary #BSD based systems for learning and educational purposes and I'm happy to share that this projects remains available. Several things could finally be clarified to continue this service to make sure people can learn and practice on real #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD systems to #RUNBSD. Also, BoxyBSD starts moving over to #Sylve on #bhyve.
But not only that! We could also get some more new resources and locations to scale and this also brings up another new project for #free Linux #VPS instances at https://boxedtux.com (Fedi: @BoxedTux) where people will be able to learn and practice on different #Linux based distributions (e.g., #Debian, #Ubuntu, #Rocky,...). BoxedTux utilizes #Proxmox clusters as a foundation.

I'm also thinking of a subscription model for MakerTube like Spectra is discussing it. Price increase at Hetzner's is hitting us quite hard (roughly +30%) and I don't know how to cover costs for future storage increase. Sadly I must say that the donation based approach has its limits. Anyone know a decent Mastodon hosting biz where both the company and the servers are run in a reasonably privacy conscious country?
Bonus points for: being a collective or social purpose company, a bus factor of >1 and payment without Paypal.
So, Codeberg (which is a FOSS/freedom-focused code hosting site) is run as a cooperative, with members able to nominate measures/policies and vote on them etc.
They just had a vote and approved policies making "AI" / LLM-based projects basically unwelcome there. The vote wasn't close; 70% voted in favour of the policy. It's not a hard & fast "if you use LLM, you're banned" or anything of the sort - it's quite a measured, reasoned stance.
The slopcoders are freaking out. They just don't understand how this is possible. Imagine! A community of people that makes their own decisions and you can't just make them do what you want or ignore them and consume their resources without their consent!
"I like slopcoding, actually" is turning out to be a *really* good litmus test for people you want to have absolutely nothing to do with your project or your community.
