Do you see a climate crisis?<br>____________________________________</p><p>More than 17,000 people in Canada’s western Manitoba province were being evacuated on Wednesday as the region experienced its worst start to the wildfire season in years.</p><p>“The Manitoba government has declared a province-wide state of emergency due to the wildfire situation,” Manitoba’s premier, Wab Kinew, told a news conference. “This is the largest evacuation Manitoba will have seen in most people’s living memory.”</p><p>The climate crisis has made wildfires in Canada more frequent and intense. The country has been hit with devastating fires in recent years, including in 2023, the most destructive on record.</p><p>There are now 134 active fires across Canada, including in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. <p>I continue to be utterly appalled at the ignorance, uneducated opinions and disgusting bigoted comments on the information posts that are giving out details about the terrible wildfires in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. No you utter morons, “they” are not starting fires to burn out “everyone” and move immigrants in, no the magnitude of these fires is not due to “arson”, the cause is climate change. It does not matter at all HOW they start, there are hundreds of little fires started for dozens of difference reasons all the time all over the place. The difference is that in horrific drought conditions coupled with high winds, the fires cannot be quickly put out as is usually the case. The fires grow into the monster that feeds itself and changes the local weather right at the fire and become impossible to stop. This used to happen occasionally in smaller areas. Now it is half the damn country and all around the planet facing these conditions. This is CLIMATE CHANGE. Climate change is caused by burning fossil fuels, not by lizard people, the homeless, immigrants, leftists or any other scapegoat spouted about. Now if y'all had listened to us decades ago when we were telling you that developing other ways of making energy might be a damn good idea, we might be pumping a fraction of the greenhouse gases into the atmosphere right now instead of this absolutely hellscape we have.<br>The absolutely BEST prep you can do is not let your family, friends or neighbours get away with saying this crap and spreading this nonsense. Tell people what is happening and why. I don't know if it's possible to stop this insanity now but if there is going to be a future on this planet, we have to encourage and support the engineers, the scientists, the inventors to keep finding and improving on better and cleaner sources of power. Edstrom is a West Point graduate, author, and former U.S. Army infantry officer who got out of the military after serving Afghanistan to study climate change and finance at Oxford University. Edstrom says the 20-year-long Afghanistan War contributed enough carbon emissions to kill multitudes of people. His assessment is based on studies such as one published in Nature Communications, which estimated that approx 4,400 metric tons of CO2 emissions is enough to kill one person. </p><p>The U.S. Department of Defense is required to report its energy use to the Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program. In FY2020, total estimated DoD greenhouse gas emissions based solely on fuel usage data were more than 51 million metric tons of CO2. That figure includes emissions from standard day-to-day operations as well as emissions from non-standard operations such as combat support, law enforcement, emergency response, and spaceflight. Edstrom says there’s more to be concerned with than just operating emissions.</p><p>Edstrom says the U.S. Department of Defense budget, which in fiscal year 2021 was more than $703 billion, is bolstered by fear. He thinks Americans’ fears are misguided. <p>I've finished: A Half-Built Garden by Ruthanna Emrys</p><p> A Half-Built Garden is the most Fediversial novel I've read. </p><p>The anarchists have won. The corporations and nation states have been sidelined. Most of the world is under the control of egalitarian communities that use an alternative network to achieve consensus and work to rehabilitate the climate change ravaged earth. </p><p>This is very much a slice of life novel in the vain of Becky Chambers, centered around a communal lgbtqia+ household. But as opposed to most slice of life novels there is a major crisis, and it falls upon this community to save the day. </p><p>Aliens have made first contact and they insist that the only way for technological species to survive is to leave their biospheres behind and build Dyson Swarms. </p><p>As their way of life comes under threat from without and within, Will the dandelion network survive?
