Sempre più spesso i futuri che sembravano impossibili diventano probabili. E Civil War cavalca molto bene le nostre paure, portandoci in luoghi riconoscibili e lasciandoci immedesimare nei suoi personaggi. E l'impatto finale è davvero molto forte.

Non ha dovuto fare un grande sforzo Alex Garland per inventarsi il distopico futuro degli Stati Uniti nel suo Civil War. Non ha fatto altro che estremizzare ciò che stiamo vivendo e portare alle sue estreme conseguenze il processo di disumanizzazione che sta interessando tutti noi. Ha condito tutto questo con immagini di guerra e conflitto che vediamo drammaticamente tutti i giorni e le ha ambientate in luoghi che quella violenza e devastazione non l’hanno mai vista. Civil War è tutto qui, nel messaggio che vuole lanciare, capace di diventare più forte e significativo del film stesso: non è tanto la violenza che viene mostrata a schermo, le morti, le esplosioni, i conflitti e l’assenza di speranza, quanto il modo in cui questi sembrino reali e possibili.

Il film diventa così un pugno allo stomaco forte e ben assestato, capace di tramortire e colpire con la sua violenza e il suo realismo, mostrandoci scenari tanto terribili quanto terribilmente possibili. La storia è quella di un Presidente degli Stati Uniti autoritario che ha perso il controllo del suo territorio, lasciando spazio a ribelli che, stato dopo stato, hanno conquistato e messo a ferro e fuoco un territorio intero, trasformandolo in un terreno di guerriglia senza regole, dove un nuovo ordine è pronto a prendere definitivamente piede con la morte di quel Presidente da cui tutto era cominciato.

Il processo di immedesimazione totale tra pubblico e film è importantissimo per Garland: per questo il nostro punto di vista è quello di un gruppo di fotoreporter in viaggio per raggiungere il cuore, il punto focale, la fine, quella Washington che è da sempre il fulcro del potere negli Stati Uniti. Noi non ci schieriamo, noi siamo loro, osserviamo e documentiamo, ossessionati dalla ricerca dell’immagine a tutti i costi, della foto perfetta, dell’attimo indimenticabile. Il problema è che in questo modo abbiamo perso praticamente tutto ciò che ci rendeva umani: e il film ce lo ricorda a ogni scena, con drammatica e cruda chiarezza.

I love all films that start with rain:
rain, braiding a windowpane
or darkening a hung-out dress
or streaming down her upturned face;

one big thundering downpour
right through the empty script and score
before the act, before the blame,
before the lens pulls through the frame

to where the woman sits alone
beside a silent telephone
or the dress lies ruined on the grass
or the girl walks off the overpass,

and all things flow out from that source
along their fatal watercourse.
However bad or overlong
such a film can do no wrong,

so when his native twang shows through
or when the boom dips into view
or when her speech starts to betray
its adaptation from a play,

I think to when we opened cold
on a starlit gutter, running gold
with the neon of a drugstore sign
and I’d read into its blazing line:

forget the ink, the milk, the blood –
all was washed clean with the flood
we rose up from the falling waters
the fallen rain’s own sons and daughters

and none of this, none of this matters.
