I’ve just finished reading a fascinating book about 3 women who rose to the top of the fashion retail business in the U.S., my favourite being Geraldine Stutz of Henri Bendel’s who brought the store back to life as a place for exclusive fashion in the 1960s #bookstodon #BookReview #reading #Storygraph #audiobook #NonFiction @bookstodon

Book Review: These Fragile Graces, This Fugitive Heart by Izzy Wasserstein

Very late start, but it's time for a 2026 thread of books I read. Heather Fawcett was excellent (although book 1 was better). Andrew Cartmel was on form. Elle Hartford was sweet seashorecore (if that's a thing!) & Laura Laakso was an excellent start to a new to me crime fantasy series with an mc with chronic pain. #amreading #books #bookstodon
Tomorrow night (Feb 13th) I'll be joining dozens of writers at the San Francisco Writers Conference Sips & Stories After Dark Event. It's free to attend, but you must register. Come say hi! I'd love to see you.
"Come mix and mingle with authors and other book lovers in the beautiful San Francisco Hyatt Regency Embarcadero on Friday night, Feb. 13th from 8-10 pm. Shop at the on-site bookstore or buy directly from the authors. Gather and socialize in the magnificent atrium of the Hyatt. A cash bar will be available and a hot chocolate bar for the little ones in the children’s section at this all-ages event. Sip and savor the sounds of live classical music from local symphony musicians and more during this unique experience. No entry fee, but a two-book-minimum is encouraged."

finished reading My Father and Other Animals: How I Took on the Family Farm 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
by Sam Vincent.
After an unsettled life of freelance writing, the author takes on the family farm. A memoir of his father and the land, an ode to regenerative agriculture, and an example of how to connect with Traditional Owners. The author is only two degrees of separation from me, so I found it easy to imagine myself in his shoes, going down a route that appeals but was not available.

Dear #bookstodon-friends, I've been thinking about doing some sharepic-style mini-reviews of books (mostly #horror/ #suspense/ #litfic) that I've been reading - I tried by best with the tools available on my phone and this is the result. Pretty enough? Sufficient info? Anything else I should/could add? #frauenlesen #iamreading @bookstodon
Picked up on a #bookstodon recommendation: a space opera that I found excellent in places but flawed. Every major character is an insanely overpowered unkillable badass, making the over the top violence feel a bit weightless. The prose is pretty good and the plotting has a lot of energy, so given that it's a debut novel I'd definitely read #BethanyJacobs again, but probably not anything from this series. @bookstodon
finished reading The Tainted Cup 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
by Robert Jackson Bennett.
A murder mystery fantasy novel - why is this a first for me?! Fairly standard whodunnit which escalates to political intrigue, made distinctive by very cool world-building: an empire built to defend against leviathans attacking from the sea, whose bodily fluids enable a raft of fantastical bio-enhancements. Interesting characters and the potential for more fleshing out give the series much promise.

finished reading Nervous Conditions 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
by Tsitsi Dangarembga.
Becoming a familiar refrain in African literature: girl fights for education & freedom against patriarchy & colonialism. This one, set in pre-independence Zimbabwe, might be the original (?) and the best, with carefully crafted & evolving characters. Ends very suddenly, though.

I love that Stephen Graham Jones pulls no punches, and names his Blackfeet main character "Good Stab."
He reminds us that true horror is perpetrated by people, and that blood will cry out for justice forever.
THE BUFFALO HUNTER HUNTER is a great title.

Some excellent books here! Of Barbara Pym: ‘I see in her characters spinsters of the type I aspire to be: incisive, busy, and fine with or without a partner. This week's #NewBooks at the library:
- I expanded my collection of #Tolkien books with The Tower and the Ruin: J.R.R. Tolkien's Creation from W.W. Norton
- I used my employer's Christmas voucher to buy a copy of Simon Parkin's The Forbidden Garden of Leningrad: A True Story of Science and Sacrifice in a City under Siege from Sceptre (look out for a review in due course).
- I also found a second-hand copy of What Is Regeneration? from the University of Chicago Press.

Dear #bookstodon, I'm looking for #recommendations - what's a book of short stories or a short(ish) novel you've enjoyed recently, in the genres of sci-fi / speculative or literary fiction? No big names please. Women / queer / neurodiverse writers interest me especially.

sometimes you have to choose a book by its cover. found this one while reshelving at the library this morning and greatly looking forward to reading it.
Reading Never Whistle At Night edited by Shane Hawk and Theodore C. Van Alst Jr. I really have loved this book, I have a little over 100 pages left. The stories are amazing.
However, I do suggest not reading before going to sleep at night. I woke up this morning saying "what the motherfucking hell" after the dreams I had.
