Finished reading #EdYong 's pop science book about the sensory worlds of animals. Full of spectacular animal facts and engagingly and thoughtfully written, but he is perhaps a little too fond of interrupting himself with asides and footnotes. As a rule I couldn't give a fetid dingo kidney for celebrity endorsements of books I'm #Reading
BUT in the https://www.deanstreetpress.co.uk/ edition of "Mystery of Mr Jessop" the intro by Curtis Evans proved an exception. Learning that PGW liked it enough to have Bertie Wooster quote from it from it left me very gruntled 😍
The introductions that DSP gets for most of their books really add a lot of interest and value to the releases. Very well worth it

A Pose Before Dying by Alex Erickson and Amy Melissa Bentley (Narrator) (2024) is the start of the Cat Yoga Mystery series. Ash Branson has just opened her cat yoga studio. She teaches yoga and fosters cats. Students who connect with a cat can adopt them. But she's plagued by a dog groomer neighbor who wants her shut down and then one of her students is murdered in her studio.

I spent yesterday afternoon finishing The Sacred and Profane Love Machine (my 3rd book by Iris Murdoch, and what a great title!) which I mostly enjoyed, especially the first half, and am looking forward to listening to the Backlisted podcast on it this morning to hear their take on it! #Bookstodon #Reading

“Rats fed a calorie restricted diet lived longer and were healthier than those allowed to eat without limit. During caloric restriction or CR, an animals is fed 30 to 50% fewer calories than it would consume if it ate as much as it liked ad libitum while making sure that it consumes enough essential nutrients to not become malnourished. In rodents and other species, animals on CR live 20 to 50% longer as judge by both average lifespan and maximum lifespan. Moreover, they appeared to have delayed the onset of several diseases of aging, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and cancer.”

It's been almost a month since I last performed any maintenance on my digital library (maintenance primarily being backing up recently purchased books and a few post-processing actions). Book six of the apparently neverending series of Deverry novels by #KatharineKerr was a strong outing, with a perfect balance between her usual elements of ethereal high magic and low, dirty, gritty small scale violence. Would be incomprehensible to anyone not already steeped in the setting and characters, however. #Bookstodon @bookstodon #fantasy
#Vietnamese history is filled with incredible women and it is something I am very proud of.
"The Bronze Drum" is a book about the first rebellion against China lead by a pair of Vietnamese sisters known as "Hai Bà Trưng." (The book is in English).
Their courage is a symbol of resilience against colonizers and oppression that has stood thousands of years.
Happy Womens Day y'all. Women are incredible.

Toxic Toffee by Amanda Flower and Rebecca Mitchell (Narrator) (2019) is the fourth book in the Amish Candy Shop mystery series. Bailey King is barely back from a brief sojourn to New York City where she was filming the pilot for Bailey's Amish Sweets when a man collapses at her feet, dead.

Why does fiction matter?
Because stories can sharpen the way we understand other people.
A meta-analysis found that reading fiction has a small but positive effect on social cognition. Including our ability to interpret emotions, motives, and inner lives.
In other words: novels may help us practice empathy.
