Killer Takeout by Lucy Burdette and Laura Jennings (Narrator) (2016) is the seventh book in the Key West Food Critic mystery series. It's Fantasy Fest time and Danielle, Hayley's coworker at Key Zest is the queen of the event this year. Things go horribly wrong when her most ardent rival is poisoned during the zombie bike ride.

A silkpunk epic full of far-fetched but fun battles - of both the naval and MasterChef kind! A refreshing change from the usual fantasy fare, although rather too long & detailed. Explores the mess of identity, culture & colonisation.

A top-notch book. Hercule Poirot mysteries are such a joy. Thoroughly enjoying it. Get your copy at:
#Bookstodon Got terrible news about my friend and Queen of Swords Press author, M.Christian last night. Chris passed away from a heart attack on 1/1. I had just nominated their gay vampire novel, RUNNING DRY, for the SSBA awards and I was trying to reach them to share that news.😢 I worked with Chris as an editor on multiple books earlier in my career and they were just a stellar human. 💔 I do know they‘d love to have more people read and celebrate their work. 1/2 https://books2read.com/runningdry
I love that The Expert of Subtle Revisions is on a list with Octavia Butler, Emily St. John Mandel, Emma Straus, Audrey Niffenegger and so many other great writers.

Five stars:
Skunk and Badger by Amy Timberlake and Jon Klassen (Illustrator) (2020) is the first book in this children's trilogy about a pair of unlikely roommates. The book was recommended to me after I enjoyed Bad Badger: A Love Story by Maryrose Wood and Guilia Ghingini (2025). Badger lives in Aunt Lulu's brownstone. He's a geologist who does "important rock work" at home in his rock room (formerly living room). He has a routine and he likes it.

A young woman gets caught up in magical machinations and is turned old & fabulously crotchety. Great characters and vibe but I lost track of the plot a bit (disclaimer: listened to this as a sleep story), and wasn't really into the romantic ending.

Dear #bookstodon,
I would like to read adult queer romance. And by ”adult” I don’t mean smut but actual ADULT characters, preferably closer to 50 than 30, and to my danmei peeps: no, immortal cultivation masters don’t count.
(This stems from several reels where people rec romantasy/romance books with ”older FML” and the FMC is like 27. *sigh*)
So. Rec me your favorites!
Boosts appreciated.

Interleaves the story of a young Albanian refugee in Finland, excluded & traumatised, with that of his mother's wedding & her hopes for a future filled with love. The symbolism of the cats & snakes is a bit weird but I think I finally got my head around it. Mostly interesting for its depictions of Albanian culture and Finnish xenophobia.

My husband is reading Pride and Prejudice. He has made a chart to keep track of everyone.
@bookstodon this cyberpunk novel of hackers, incomprehensible AIs, and privatised armies had its moments, but had too many annoying flaws for me to recommend it, with sometimes overly purple prose ("his cologne redolent of river water and orchids" - what the heck kind of scent is that supposed to be?) and some quite derivative plot points, like wasting chapters on a retread of Neal Stephenson's 'primer'. #Bookstodon
10% into #Reading "Indo-European Language and Culture: An Introduction" and really enjoying it. BUT I assumed the exercises would have answers! 😱 In the one below, the reader is asked if any of these languages are not related to the others. I was chuffed to identify 1, Hawaiian (I think) , by the similarities to Māori. But I'd love to know what all the languages ARE. I suspect there may be Greek, Albanian and Romany in the list, but would love to KNOW 😭 #linguistics #bookstodon @bookstodon
I have to say I feel we're missing a few steps towards an explanation of how "for suppository use only" got in the mix of approprite warning lables 🤔😂

I am downright delighted to announce that my latest book, YOU DESERVE A TECH UNION, has a brand new look. I really love it, and I hope you do too.
Here’s a look at what’s changed and—maybe more importantly—what’s stayed the same:

X Marks the Haunt by Lindsay Currie (2026) is a middle grade mystery-horror set at Graceland cemetery in Chicago. After a crypt key goes missing the cemetery starts having problems and the crypt keeper's son is being personally haunted by the ghost of a young girl.

The ARC of my new novella is now ready, via BookSirens. It's a #solarpunk story set in an African nation without capitalism, or governments and politicians, and centers on a 70yr old peasant woman who has to coordinate the defense of the country when a colonizer invades. https://booksirens.com/book/BUG035E/WXLHD4W

Call of the Night, Volume 5 by Kotoyama (2020) looks more closely at what it means to be a vampire. It for lack of a better word, humanizes the experience. Taken in the context of when the book was released, it is a meditation on the affects of isolation and forced routine.

Help a writer out, please. I’m writing a humorous cosy sci-fi murder mystery.
I have a character who is an absolute delight. He’s affirming and wholesome. He’s a monk. I need help naming his religious order. It’s the Siblinghood of the [adjective] [noun].
Suggestions? Please and thanks.
Yesterday I finished reading "Shift", by Hugh Howey.
It's the second book in the Silo trilogy and definitely the one with the most lore-building / world-building in it, but narrated in a great way to not make it so boring.
Usually I don't like continuously shifting through different timelines but in this case I felt it was a great choice, given the whole concept.
I will shift towards another book and after that I will go for the last book in the trilogy :)
An Austen relative I’ve never heard of, but she seems like a hoot!
