Took a break from the 1245 page book, to read this little ol' 65 pager.
"Mestra," by Madeline Miller, is a short story recently published as a standalone.
This fable regards the twin evils of greed and arrogance. I had never heard the story before and was glad that I knew nothing going in. 4 ⭐️
Sally Rooney, author of "Normal People" is apparently no longer able to sell her books in the UK because of her pro-Palestine views. What the absolute fuck.
I read Normal People a few years ago and quite enjoyed it, so I think I'll take this opportunity to look into her other books.
finished reading Dungeon Crawler Carl
Goddammit Donut.
That was fun. After reading so many "isekai" novels and manga, I'm a little burnt out on the whole litRPG concept. But this book was sitting there on the shelf with multiple staff recommendations, so I figured why not at least try the first volume. And I'm glad I did. It doesn't just check off a list of tropes like so many other stories, but rather does its own thing within a similar framework. I'll be picking up the second book next shopping trip.

She’s small and cute, but this half-demon New Yorker lives to exterminate demons, because they murdered her parents. The demonic curse preventing her from saying anything but “it’s a secret” only fuels her desire for revenge.

Natalie is the perfect Christian trad(itional)wife. An influencer with millions of followers, she’s the perfect cook, the perfect wife to her sweet cowboy husband, and the perfect mother to her five kids (with a sixth on the way). She’s a most likable woman living a perfectly traditional life on a perfectly traditional farm. At least, that’s what she presents on her social media accounts; behind the camera, things are much less rosy. Things take a sharp turn when she awakens to find herself struggling to survive in a nineteenth century version of her farm house, with a harder version of her husband and similar but different children. The story alternates between the influencer timeline and the prairie timeline as things seem to get worse in both. This is an interesting book, but it’s not enjoyable. The only likable character is a small child, though I at least felt sympathy for some of the other side characters. The book has a lot to say about social media, conservatism, and kindness.

"Opting Out: Women Messing with Marriage around the World" by Joanna Davidson (editor). My rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Published in 2022.
Book description: Women around the world are opting out of marriage. This book reveals the conditions that make this widespread phenomenon possible in places where marriage has long been obligatory. Each chapter invites readers into the lives of particular women and the changing circumstances in which these lives unfold - sometimes painfully, sometimes humorously, and always unexpectedly. Taken together, the essays in this volume prompt the following: Why is marriage so consistently disappointing for women? When the rewards of economic stability and the social status that marriage confers are troubled, does marriage offer women anything compelling at all?
I found this book well written, organized and interesting.
How literature can inspire us to forgive
A story that places us inside the mind of a character who is remorseful about causing harm can inspire forgiveness for that fictional bad act, a new study finds.

"The Last Flight: The Untold Story of the Search for JFK Jr. and the Race Against the Atlantic" by Captain W. Russell Webster & Theresa M. Webster. My rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Published in 2026.
Book description: "On a hazy July night in 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn, and her sister Lauren vanished over the waters off Martha’s Vineyard—triggering a national vigil and one of the most ambitious search operations in American history. For days, the world watched and waited. This book is the full story of what happened after the crash. Captain W. Russell “Russ” Webster, the Coast Guard commander who led the search, and historian Theresa Mitchell Webster, take readers inside the mission to locate the missing aircraft and recover its passengers.
A sad but informative read--one not filled with speculation, but a chronicle of that time, the subsequent search, recovery and investigation of this tragedy.
The War on Poverty Is Over. Rich People Won.
INCARNATE, by Alma Katsu is a satirical techno-thriller, about the dangers of social media and AI, that could not be more timely.
I've read Katsu's work before, but I had no idea that for this book, she drew on her background as a social media research analyst for the U.S. federal government. As a technology forecaster, she saw exactly where all of the early days of social media were taking us: to a dark place.
This story is written with some fantasy flourishes, which helps us digest the messages we need to hear: about what social media screen addiction, AI-generated content, deepfakes, and influencer trends, have done to change us, perhaps irreparably.
Added this title to my digital library and to my TBR list.

Sally Rooney has said she is being forced to withdraw her books from sale in the UK because of her support for the banned organisation Palestine Action.
The Irish novelist, whose books include Normal People and Conversations With Friends, said her public support for the direct action group meant she could no longer receive royalties from UK sales.
After Palestine Action was banned last year, Rooney said she would use proceeds from her sales to support Palestine Action. Supporting organisations banned under the Terrorism Act is an offence and she subsequently cancelled a trip to the UK to pick up an award, for fear of arrest.
In a statement provided to the Guardian, the bestselling author said: “‘In July 2025, the direct-action protest group Palestine Action was proscribed as a terrorist organisation in the UK. The following month, I wrote an opinion piece expressing my intention to go on supporting Palestine Action, which is not a proscribed or otherwise prohibited group here in the Republic of Ireland.
“As a result, the fulfilment of contracts to publish my work in the UK could now constitute a serious criminal offence. After a process of consultation and deliberation, and with my full agreement, my publisher Faber has therefore determined that it can no longer supply my work within the UK. I have made every effort to be honest with the public about my beliefs and intentions, and I am wholly prepared to accept the consequences.”

"Less is More: Finding Joy in a Simpler Life" by Robin James. My rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Published in 2020.
Book description: This book is filled with a raft of practical tips and ideas to help the reader find happiness and contentment through simplifying different aspects of their lifestyle. Discover the art of finding more through having less: more time, more calm, more energy, more money, more you. This book will guide you toward a simpler way of life. Learn how to reduce your clutter and your stress levels, find advice on mastering your schedule and making time for what matters to you.
I read these kind of books because I almost always find useful take aways from them, as I did with this book. The author presents suggestions in a very practical and nonjudgmental way which is clear an orderly and easy to follow. Also, it is a short book.
