I'm participating in a challenge to read all the #NewberyAward winners and the first book, The Story of Mankind, is raising an interesting question: read the book as originally written or read an updated version? (I'm sure other questions about a history written in the 20s by a white European man will arise!)
I favor the original, because that's what won the prize and I want to see what they were seeing. One reader pointed out the probable dilution of the original authorial voice in updates. Others want to compare/contrast. I am curious whether there were any changes because of changing cultural norms or if it's all just adding on more history.
As for the book, I expected to be bored to death but it's actually quite engaging.
