📚 A Life in Lyrics by: Freddie Mercury
Freddie Mercury was one of the greatest showmen of the twentieth century. With his unparalleled voice and searing on-stage energy, he was a great pretender, a killer queen and a champion of the world.
But behind the glamour lived a musician and lyricist talented beyond...

Sequel to Foundryside, set in the same city in which inanimate objects can be "scrived” to somewhat change their structure or state (make a wooden door behave more like stone, or a sword behave like it’s moving much faster than it is). In the prior book we learned that this ability was learned from recovered fragments from a long gone civilization of "hierophants” who were masters of it. Here, Sancha and most of the main characters from the prior book have settled into a new life, but learn that someone is attempting to resurrect the original and greatest hierophant, who is likely to destroy their world. As with the first, I enjoyed this book. The world is interesting, the characters relatable, and the action kept the pages turning.

When Boys Stop Reading, Something Else Fills the Void
"Tackling child sexual abuse: Radical approaches to prevention, protection and support" by Sarah Nelson. My rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Published in 2016.
Book description: This book is intended to inspire policy makers, practitioners, academics and journalists to rediscover courage in tackling child sexual abuse. Sarah Nelson proposes new models for child-centered, perpetrator-focussed child protection, for community prevention, and for work with survivor-offenders.
I found this book to be an interesting and thought provoking read. Child sexual abuse is a serious societal ill, and the author focuses on being continually vigilant and being open to new and progressive tactics in dealing with its trauma.
The Man Who Created a Written Language for the Cherokee Did It So Efficiently and Elegantly, His Peers Thought It Was Magic

New U.S. books of interest for today, October 13, 2026:
SPOKE, Kat Leyh. Believe it or not, this is a cozy post-apocalyptic graphic novel.
OFF THE RESERVATION, Stephen Graham Jones. This is the sequel to THE ONLY GOOD INDIANS, which came out in 2020. Did anyone know that there was going to be a sequel?
THE TULIP POPLARS, Silas House, author of the CliFi near-future dystopian novel LARK ASCENDING, which I highly recommend. Looking forward to this new historical novel.
AS YOU WAKE, BREAK THE SHELL, Becky Chambers. Always with a positive and uplifting message, this is her first book in a new series.
ODETTE RISING, by Julianne Edwards. This novel may be our sleeper hit of the year.
Another busy week without much reading done. Just my daily chapters of different web novels.

All Them Dogs. Djamel White.
You are an Irish gangster (junior grade), and on return to your hometown after some trouble, you find…more trouble, not the least of which is an unlikely secret “workplace” romance that just complicates everyone’s gangsterish plots to kill each other.

"Dirty Work: Essential Jobs and the Hidden Toll of Inequality in America" by Eyal Press. My rating: 5 out of 5 stars. Published in 2021.
Book description: This book is about the work that society considers essential but morally compromised. Drone pilots who carry out targeted assassinations. Undocumented immigrants who man the “kill floors” of industrial slaughterhouses. Guards who patrol the wards of the United States’ most violent and abusive prisons. The author offers a paradigm-shifting view of the moral landscape of contemporary America through the stories of people who perform society’s most ethically troubling jobs.
I found this book fascinating and highly relatable, as I often wonder, when using a product, or wearing clothing, under what conditions was it manufactured, and how much remuneration did the workers receive?

The 1600s pioneer who challenged earth's origins
Some 400 years ago natural philosopher and writer John Aubrey wrote a huge book about Wiltshire's natural history but the ideas it contained were so radical that it was not published in full at the time.

Sally Rooney, author of "Normal People" is apparently no longer able to sell her books in the UK because of her pro-Palestine views. What the absolute fuck.
I read Normal People a few years ago and quite enjoyed it, so I think I'll take this opportunity to look into her other books.

"Less is More: Finding Joy in a Simpler Life" by Robin James. My rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Published in 2020.
Book description: This book is filled with a raft of practical tips and ideas to help the reader find happiness and contentment through simplifying different aspects of their lifestyle. Discover the art of finding more through having less: more time, more calm, more energy, more money, more you. This book will guide you toward a simpler way of life. Learn how to reduce your clutter and your stress levels, find advice on mastering your schedule and making time for what matters to you.
I read these kind of books because I almost always find useful take aways from them, as I did with this book. The author presents suggestions in a very practical and nonjudgmental way which is clear an orderly and easy to follow. Also, it is a short book.
📚 A Canticle for Leibowitz by: Walter M. Miller, Jr.

When Europe’s monastic libraries were looted, Britain’s richest book collectors went hunting
The forgotten story of how Britain acquired Europe’s rarest books.
by Kelsey Williams
Natalie is the perfect Christian trad(itional)wife. An influencer with millions of followers, she’s the perfect cook, the perfect wife to her sweet cowboy husband, and the perfect mother to her five kids (with a sixth on the way). She’s a most likable woman living a perfectly traditional life on a perfectly traditional farm. At least, that’s what she presents on her social media accounts; behind the camera, things are much less rosy. Things take a sharp turn when she awakens to find herself struggling to survive in a nineteenth century version of her farm house, with a harder version of her husband and similar but different children. The story alternates between the influencer timeline and the prairie timeline as things seem to get worse in both. This is an interesting book, but it’s not enjoyable. The only likable character is a small child, though I at least felt sympathy for some of the other side characters. The book has a lot to say about social media, conservatism, and kindness.
