I had a chance to witness the Great Blue Herons elaborate courtship rituals at the Everett Marina in Washington state recently.
Although they don't mate for life, they form a close bond for a breeding season.
The male picks the nest site and attracts a female, e.g. with offering twigs, if she accepts them its a sure sign of success and they go on displaying other types of courtship rituals.
In this capture the male just returns to the chosen nest site and offers a twig, the partner will be arranging the nest after accepting it.
Fascinating to observe their coded behavior.

<p>there are a pair of neighborhood crows nesting in my back yard. today, one of them found a dry old piece of bread somewhere down the alley and flew over to my lawn with it.</p><p>she looked around carefully and dropped it into the eavestrough drain, where some water pooled from an overnight shower.</p><p>she flew away for 5 minutes and just came back to eat once it was well soaked 😆 </p><p><a href="/tags/urbananimals/" rel="tag">#urbanAnimals</a> <a href="/tags/birds/" rel="tag">#birds</a> <a href="/tags/yeg/" rel="tag">#yeg</a></p>
