#art #history: jazz juggernaut, arthur blakey (born #otd in 1919 to a single mum who died soon after art arrived), was raised by a family friend. he first gravitated toward the piano, but soon found his true groove with the drums & rose up through the ranks playing alongside bebop monsters charlie parker, dizzy gillespie & thelonious monk.

As a child in a religious household, I was admonished to not ask questions, because that's how the devil worked doubt in one's heart.

"Trust the pastor," was the message.

Seems silly, doesn't it? But the same message is fed to us outside of the church when we're instructed to "Trust the science. Listen to the experts. Don't do your own research."

I think asking questions is an absolutely sound plan.

I freely admit that I have no desire to clamber about a roof repairing clay tiles, but I most definitely enjoyed viewing them from our apartment balcony in Orvieto, Italy.

(And I heartily admire those who clamber about on those roofs, repairing them.)
