A massive snake sculpture, made by artist Javier Senosiain, emerges from a small pond on the grounds of the Clark Museum in Williamstown, MA. The sculpture is in 3 pieces, each made of bright purple and streaks of other colors mosaic tiles. The bottoms of each piece is below the water line so that the snake loops up in several spots. Its head is high above the water. The piece is titled “Coatia III.”

Swedish author and illustrator Elsa Beskow died #OTD in 1953.

Beskow's first book, "Sagan om den lilla, lilla gumman", was published in 1897. It was followed by "Tomtebobarnen" (1910), "Pelles nya kläder" (1912) and "Tant Grön, tant Brun och tant Gredelin" (1918). In her honor, the Elsa Beskow Award was established in 1958 by the Swedish Library Association. This award is given annually to the best Swedish picture book illustrator.

The children of the forest (lit. the "w:tomte children") are trying to play w:seesaw with them, but the elves are so light and tender that even though they are eight and the children only two, they don't weight even.

"Self-Portrait," Marie Benoist, 1786.

Marie-Guillemine Benoist (1768-1826) was obviously very talented, having painted this while only in her teens. And she went on to be an acclaimed neoclassical and historic painter. She was initially trained under Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun and later under Jacques-Louis David, so she had guidance from some of the top talent of her day.

She became an in-demand portraitist, and even had commissions from Napoleon Bonaparte himself. She enjoyed quite a big of success...until the Bonaparte era crumbled. In the face of growing conservatism in Europe, she tactfully retired from public life and only rarely painted.

I love the energy depicted here...it's so obviously the work of someone very young and very excited and confident.
