It's herring season in the Salish Sea and the herring are spawning in the area where I live. This means there are hundreds of sea lions around and feasting. It's noisy 24/7 but it's a musical noise. #wildlifephotography

A sea lion is raising its head up as it rests on a dock that is just below the water. Its mouth is open and its head is pointing up and toward the right as it barks. The sea lion is various colours of brown, from golden to dark brown. The lower 2/3s of the photo around the sea lion is blue-grey water, the upper 1/3 is muddy shoreline.

This is the shape of birdsong. Because the bird is a Red-winged Blackbird, it's also the shape of swearing.

Posting this again for the sake of pinning it as I don't want to go through a bunch of posts to find when I originally posted it.

The raccoons I regularly post were born somewhere in my backyard late last May/June. The triplets were born first, and these two a little while later. I suspect these two were woken when the triplets were taken out by their mom, with these two following briefly. Didn't get very far.

I had an incredible encounter with this rare Fiordland crested penguin on the West Coast, a moment I’ll never forget.
These elusive penguins are one of the world’s rarest, and facing threats from habitat loss, predators, and climate change. Encounters like this remind me why protecting New Zealand’s fragile coastal ecosystems is so important to me.

April 1st really does make you feel like the butt-end of a joke...

I almost missed #WildlifeWednesday so, here is a last minute submission - a cute female mallard resting in a small pond.

Despite being general jerks, and very common, Mallards are actually one of my favourite ducks. The females have that incredibly gorgeous purple flair under their wing that I always love seeing.

It was musth season in South Africa and the bull elephants can be quite agressive. That made it all the more exhilerating to have this bull just feet from our truck standing alongside the road. He had been in our camp the night before.

There’s something about an owl’s stare that stops you in your tracks.

Those enormous eyes, the wild feathered tufts, and an expression that seems to say it knows exactly what you’re doing. This Eurasian eagle-owl was such a beautiful character to photograph.
