Seen elsewhere. Not my photo. Don't handle bats.
"Hello I'm a bat...
I don't suck your blood and I won't get tangled in your hair.
If I happen to enter your house, please don't hit me with bats or squash me out; it hurts a lot and on such occasions I'm very scared. It was an accident and I didn't mean to scare you.
If I land, I may not be able to get up and I need your help. Just grab a towel and pull me out carefully. I'll fly right away, I promise.
I feed on mosquitoes and many other insects.
Our houses are being demolished to build other buildings and we still have a few places to go. So if I'm flying in your space, turn off the lights and leave the outside light on with the door open, I'll be out shortly."

My shed isn’t just a home for Northern Watersnakes, Eastern Phoebes, and Terror Birds ™

Eleven days ago I discovered a Monarch chrysalis up under the far corner of the shed awning. It was inches from last year’s chrysalis!

Yesterday was the emergence! Travel well, my little friend.

Closeup of two attached wooden beams that make up the frame of a shed awning. Tucked up under, securely protected, is a green Monarch chrysalis hanging from its tiny attachment. It is about an inch long. Just an inch from it is last year’s white chrysalis remains.

Closeup of the same underside of a shed in the first photo. The chrysalis is no longer green, instead it is nearly translucent and a newly emerged Monarch butterfly is still holding on to it. Its wings are the classic Monarch colors but are lighter in color and wrinkly. It’ll need to spend some time drying them out before it can take its first flight. About an inch from where it hangs is last year’s chrysalis.

I’m going in!

I have Northern Watersnake friends that live on, and in, my stacked firewood. We’re neighbors you could say.

But now we have a contractor who is building a new awning and I need to temporarily relocate some of the wood. I’m going to have to squeeze my way in there.

Of course the snakes will think this is hilarious.

Parts of two stacks of firewood are pictured, the front one a bit lower than the back. They are both stacked near a shed. Auto the front stack, a Northern Watersnake is curled up with its face looking at me. On the back row is a second snake entangled in the wood. Both snakes are medium-sized about 2+ feet long and have gray and reddish triangular patterns.

They are only separated by about 18 inches, enough for me to squeeze in if I need to.
