As ICE terrorizes communities, crypto executives who spent years posting about freedom have gone conspicuously silent. But behind the scenes, they’ve contributed at least $315 million — more than double their record 2024 spending — to elect more lawmakers to enable this administration.

Hey, remember when Rashida Tlaib, my least-hated U.S. politician and the only Palestinian-American representative in Congress, was censured for sharing a video that called for freedom "from the river to the sea" in support of Gazans being targeted for literal genocide by the IDF? What do you think GOP congressman Tim Walberg will get for *checks notes* boldly declaring we should nuke Gaza like "Nagasaki and Hiroshima" and then calling for the U.S. to end all humanitarian aid to millions of people literally suffering from an engineered famine in Gaza?
"The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations also weighed in, saying “this clear call to genocide by a member of Congress should be condemned by all Americans who value human life and international law”.
“To so casually call for what would result in the killing of every human being in Gaza sends the chilling message that Palestinian lives have no value,” CAIR executive director Dawud Walid said.
“It is this dehumanization of the Palestinian people that has resulted in the ongoing slaughter and suffering we see every day in Gaza and the West Bank.”
Look, Walberg's minions can cry about it being a metaphor all they like, but the fact is the video evidence available online and the fact that he suggested the same solution to ending the war in Ukraine, makes it very clear that it wasn't. There really isn't a whole lot of room to parse quotes like "we shouldn’t be spending a dime on humanitarian aid" and "it should be like Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Get it over quick." This was definitely Timmy boy signaling to his cracker base (which hates Michigan's urban Muslim population) his willingness to "kill 'em all" while backing his party leader's (Trump) longstanding policy position of starving Palestinians out of Gaza by blocking U.S. aid to one of the most vulnerable populations on Earth; in the middle of an IDF genocidal campaign of collective punishment against Gazans no less.
Of course, given that murdering Palestinians en masse is officially a bipartisan policy position in American politics and the GOP doesn't do accountability in its own party, I'm willing to bet you a fresh Tang sandwich that absolutely nothing will happen to Walberg in response.
PS: sorry about the Tribune link but most of the major national "liberal" media outlets were hiding this story behind a paywall when I was searching it up online late last night.
Without a Democratic sweep in November, Biden’s attempt to explicitly codify Roe v Wade will fail.
But Biden can recommend that Congress undertake many other legal reforms, removing some obstacles to getting an abortion

Congratulations to #UCLA for its victory in court against the Trump administration. This is the first step in the reinstatement of approved but unlawfully withheld research grants.

PS: No university that has brought such a suit has lost. Harvard and UCLA have both won. There's no reason for other universities in the same boat to capitulate.

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Markwayne Mullin to replace Kristi Noem as DHS Secretary in a 54-45 vote. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa. and Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M. voted to confirm, while Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., voted against. Here's all the latest from NBC.
Civil society is the web of nonprofits, unions, churches and community groups that protect democratic life.
When governments attack or control these groups, it’s a red flag for authoritarianism –– and Americans are noticing.

The government does not track how often immigration agents hold Americans. So ProPublica did.
We found more than 170 such incidents since the start of the second Trump administration. Our tally — almost certainly incomplete — includes people who were held for days without a lawyer. And nearly 20 children, two of whom have cancer.

President Joe Biden is marking Earth Day by launching a website for applications for his Climate Corps jobs and training program, a plan that has attracted a lot of interest from young Americans.
NPR reports: "Eventually, the corps will employ more than 20,000 young people."
When U.S. President Trump visited the the U.K., he wanted to give King Charles a sword from the Dwight D Eisenhower Presidential Library. The director, Todd Arrington, refused because the artifact had been accepted as a donation and therefore belongs to the American people. Now he's been forced to resign — and doesn't quite understand why. Here's more from @CBSNews.

The team behind Trump's World Liberty Financial project has proposed lifting restrictions on the WLFI "governance token" to make it tradeable. I predicted shortly after its launch that if Trump succeeded in gutting the SEC, he would do this.
This would lift the substantial restrictions on the token (non-US or accredited investors only, locked tokens with no secondary sales) that were aimed at sidestepping attention from the previous SEC, and could be enormously lucrative for Trump.
From the wholesale gutting of federal agencies to the ongoing government shutdown, Russell Vought has drawn the road map for Trump’s second term. Vought has consolidated power to an extent that insiders say they feel like “he is the commander in chief.”
Garrett Graff hopes this weekend's No Kings protests will someday be looked back upon as a turning point. Here's his story for his newsletter, Doomsday Scenario, in which he lists his reasons for hope: Trump's unpopularity, the fact that he can't last forever, and America's historical imperfection. "Today may be dark, but the story of America for 250 years is that — with hard work by good people — tomorrow there is hope it will be better," he writes.
