I'm a bit of a typography nerd but I need the help of better nerds, please and thank you:
- I'm looking for a *multilingual* (eng, spa, catalan) pixel font with *italics* and **bold**. (No easy task)
- It's for my personal daily use, I'll be writing and reading lots of text with it, so it needs to be *readable* above all else
- I love the look of Px IBM PS2thin4, see attachment

One of my professors at the Leiden summer school told me something interesting. Historically, many linguistics textbooks and papers have been physically published in Leiden, often featuring ancient or minority writing systems. Before the digital typesetting era, typesetters in Leiden were *contractually obligated* not to learn any rare writing systems or languages, and to work purely by verifying that the typeset text looked visually identical to the submitted manuscript. This is because when you *can* read it, you're inevitably going to transcribe what you think you read, not what you actually read, which is a big problem when the entire point is to showcase exactly what ancient people did write and not what we think they should have written
I haven’t used Times New Roman since 2008 but I still see it pop up in the wild every now and again. So I made an explainer video about why you should stop using it and what you should use instead. #TypographyNerd

Cool History Fact of the night
Before woodblock printing (which was extensively used in China well before the west), there was a very clever, effective way to mass-reproduce the most important texts.
A few different times in imperial China, stone tablets of the most important books were commissioned. Anyone could walk up and look at them, but more importantly: anyone could lay a wet piece of paper over them and then gently rub ink over the paper, which would create a copy of white text on a black background.(And unlike printing, nothing needs to be done backwards.)
And if you were a famous enough calligrapher, you'd be asked to write onto a stone so someone else could chisel out your handwriting exactly, and then copies could be mass-reproduced as teaching examples.
(and I'm fascinated by how the stone fragment here is 1800 years old but the writing style is already extremely legible to me. It still uses the X-style 五 but is otherwise very Normal)
