New #ThinkPad #OpenBSD boot logo and I've not installed yet as not committed to installing OpenBSD yet. But what do you think ???

This looks handy for when I install #OpenBSD 7.8 Current onto my #ThinkPad P14s Gen 1 AMD.

amd64:
Fix processing of GPIO events for pin numbers less than 256 with an _EVT method. Fixes power button on various ThinkPads with AMD CPUs.

I keep having to remind myself that this #FreeBSD laptop isn't running Linux.

Other than a few very minor issues, it JUST WORKS. After all of the work (it wasn't even hard, really) of setting it up and customizing a couple of my scripts to run on FreeBSD, the OS does its most important job: disappearing.

This is pretty cool. Give yourselves a pat on the back, #FreeBSD devs. Things are really getting better.

Disclaimer: Just because I haven't encountered any deal-breakers doesn't mean that you won't. Always do your due diligence and try it out on a non-critical machine, first. Also, using an old #Thinkpad (instead of a brand new whatever) is usually the best advice for stuff like this ;)

Finally tried #NetBSD 10.1 RELEASE baremetal on my #ThinkPad #T470s. Good news is most things seem to work out of box: WiFi, touchpad, i915 drived video card. Bad news is, suspend/wakeup (S3) not working. It appears suspend worked well since after issuing sysctl -w hw.acpi.sleep.state=3 the laptop went to sleep with blinking power led, fan stops. However, at wakeup keyboard just stops responding, even swtiching tty with Ctrl-Alt-Fn keys. WiFi usually wakes up just fine since I gain ssh session back shortly after wakeups. I will conclude a major issue for a system if suspend/wakeup won't work for a laptop. I simply cannot imagine having to poweroff a laptop every day before going to bed. It is kinda a sueprise to me since I assume ThinkPad laptops usually get along well with #BSD and #Linux systems.

FYI, S3 suspend/wakeup works flawlessly with #FreeBSD and #OpenBSD on this laptop without any hack.

ThinkPad and Linux question:

Is the NVIDIA Quadro M1000M graphics in the ThinkPad P50 laptop useful at all with Linux?

Laptop has a pretty powerful i7 processor, but not officially supported by Windows 11 and the NVIDIA Quadro M1000M graphics has also been discontinued from support by nVidia (not sure what that means).

... so will it work okay with Linux ?

Only one way to find out, but thought I'd throw the question out here.

I just got a refurbished ThinkPad L15 Gen 1 laptop out to a local customer.

He asked for Linux, so I recommended and pre-installed Linux Mint Debian Edition.

I should have taken a screenshot of the 'fetch' output on this laptop. Nice upgrades. Intel i7 (10th gen), upgraded to 32GB memory (two 16GB modules) and a new 1TB Crucial NVME SSD.

Two out of the three laptops I got back to customers yesterday had Linux on them. The majority. Not bad!

One sale (mentioned in another post) of a ThinkPad L15 laptop with Linux Mint Debian Edition.

The second laptop was a service where the customer had run out of storage space on a small SSD on an HP with Devuan Linux - I used CloneZilla to clone to a larger SSD and fixed a few other things.

The third laptop was a SSD replacement, fresh Windows 11 installation with data recovery and transfer.

Today I sold a ThinkPad T560 laptop to someone who crossed state lines to get it (my storefront isn't that far from the border).

T560 was upgrade to 16GB memory (PC3L), a 256GB SATA SSD and had an Intel i5-6300U processor. It was in excellent condition.

Operating System was Linux Mint Debian Edition, which I pre-installed. He may install PopOS, as he's been using that for quite a while from a USB flash drive on another computer.

Working on Mint-ifying an ancient ThinkPad T400. It doesn't have a backlit keyboard but I've found it's got a "ThinkLight" - a wee white light at the top of the screen activated by Fn + PgUp.

Following my #NetBSD 10.1 journey where my #ThinkPad T470s wake up from S3 suspend with dead keyboard and touchpad yet working WiFi, today I tried with the lastest 11.0 snapshot (20251220). All the same as before, unresponsive keyboard and touchpad, with working WiFi. However when I tried with a USB connected keyboard in default #CTWM session, the keyboard seemed to work after a while. At the same time, WiFi got disconnected so I lost ssh access and had to use power button for hard shutdown.

I think I will probably end my NetBSD journey at this point.
