The little Acer doesn't (totally) love OpenBSD 7.9:
- fans are always spinning fast and it's hot. I could probably try to fix it, but I have no time at the moment
- it doesn't suspend - and it's critical, for me
I haven't tried other things, except that Mate works perfectly on X and I can use the touchpad. Volume controls work, the brightness controls work. A step ahead from 7.8, but still not perfect.
I'll probably reinstall Void Linux on ZFS.

I haven't had a personal laptop for a few years lol I've just been using work laptops on my trips. It worked fine since I mostly just used browser. But now I'm deep (aka three days) into my web app development that I need a personal laptop to install all the tools I need... Work laptop has too many restrictions
I'd rather have a x1 carbon but E14 is sufficient for me...
Could anyone suggest a #laptop series|models with 2 GPUs (I am thinking of the type with integrated & discreet kinds) that are in current, or in perhaps future, production? I may buy in 6-12 months in USA.
Purpose is to pass the extra #GPU device to a #virtualMachine for GUI. I am inclined towards HP EliteBook, Dell Pro (& may be Lenovo ThinkPad if its fucking shop would work) series.
OS would likely be #FreeBSD (failing that, some Linux(?)).
I have a huge favour to ask! If anybody owns #Asus #laptop, I need screenshots from #ArmouryCrate! Specifically, min and default values of sliders for CPU, GPU and Mid on battery and plugged in. Please share it with friends to increase the reach and help us gather as much data as possible! #PC

Yesterday was quite the day! My replacement #Dell battery arrived. Opened the #laptop, swapped the battery, powered it on. It booted up but failed to recognize my SSD and thus I couldn't boot into the OS. Strange.
#BIOS showed there wasn't a battery connected. Also strange. As per Dell's documentation, I needed to completely clear the power. Did that.
Still no disk recognized. BIOS still showed I can only boot from the NIC. Great. I found the BIOS version was severely out of date by 5-6 years. Downloaded the new firmware and flashed it successfully. The laptop *still* doesn't recognize the SSD....but does recognize I have a new battery. I guess that's an improvement.
Interestingly, while using the BIOS flash tool, the laptop can see part of the SSD as I was able to see part of Debian's /boot partition.
Never in my life did I ever expect replacing a laptop battery would cause me this much pain.

How do I get the BIOS to recognize my SSD?
Do I want an Intel or AMD based refurbished Thinkpad for Linux in 2026? Is Intel still the best supported platform or won’t it matter much anymore?
Y'know what? I don't think I ever swapped the hard drive on this #FreeBSD #laptop for an #ssd. I think it's still the 13 year old 5,400 RPM drive. Whoops.
Pretty sure that explains why it feels slower than molasses dripping down a freezer wall.
I mean, 16GB of RAM and a quad core i7 is still pretty good for a laptop running nothing but #openbox and #Firefox - though that has become quite the resource hog. 🤔
