I may occasionally toot about these
Currently looking for education in some kind of Systems Administration Role, and run #NixOS on a daily basis. I also build my own machines.
My toots and boosts may occasionally be #NSFW. DNI with these unless you are of legal age.
Feel free to DM me, unless you're a #troll, #bigot, or anything else of the sort.

Halley's Comet won't reappear until 2061, but Pons-Brooks is a similar big, long-period comet putting -- and it's putting on a show *right now*.
You'll need good binoculars, but oh is it pretty. Photo taken on Monday by Michael Jäger.

The first published photo of Earth from space was released 77 years ago today (7 March 1947).
It was taken from a captured German V-2 rocket, used by the US Army as part of Operation Paperclip, at an altitude of 101 miles (162km).

Thirty years after the first exoplanets were discovered, hundreds of additional exoplanets have been identified within the “habitable zone,” a place where liquid water and maybe even life may exist. The Event Horizon Telescope has unveiled how Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy, looks like in polarised light, which tells us a lot about the magnetic field around this monster.
The lines overlaid on the image below mark the orientation of the polarisation, from which astronomers can work out the structure of the magnetic field around the black hole.

Only three humans have ever witnessed an eclipse of the Sun by the *Earth*. It happened while the Apollo 12 crew was returning home from the Moon, on November 21, 1969.
Fortunately, the astronauts filmed the moment so you can share in the experience.

The astronauts aboard the ISS were amazed by the April 8 solar eclipse, just like the rest of us, and went crazy snapping photos from orbit.
They got some amazing views of the Moon's shadow sweeping across southern Canada & Maine, seen from 420 km (261 miles) above: https://www.flickr.com/photos/nasa2explore/with/53645140833 #space #eclipse #space #astronomy
There is something seriously wrong with our understanding of the universe. Scientists using the James Webb and Hubble space telescopes have triple-checked and confirmed that depending on where we look, the universe is expanding at bafflingly different rates. Live Science explains more, including how scientists are ruling out a measurement error as the cause of the “Hubble Tension.” https://flip.it/VDvM6g

A mind-blower for a Friday evening:
This deceptively simple-looking graph is a spectrum of *gravitational waves* ringing through the Milky Way.
The waves may be caused by a chorus of supermassive black holes colliding all across the universe. Whoa!

There's an unfulfilled demand for public institutions to communicate on open and independent platforms.
Aurora colors come from atoms that are trying to shed some of their energy.
In very thin air, oxygen survives in a delicate, high-energy state that emits green light. In denser air, atomic collisions knock oxygen to a lower-energy state that emits red. Nitrogen is a robust emitter that glows bright in even lower, denser layers of the atmosphere.
Beautiful science.

Last night, Europe's new heavy-lift rocket, #Ariane6, successfully made its inaugural flight.
Ariane 6 can launch both heavy and light payloads to a wide range of orbits for applications such as Earth observation, telecommunication, meteorology, science and navigation.
It is a key step towards secure and autonomous 🇪🇺 access to #space.
Congratulations to the teams at European Space Agency, National Centre for Space Studies, Arianespace on this success!
