Today, the Klamath River is flowing freely for the first time in more than 100 years.
The dams have been removed. The ecosystems are being nurtured. And sovereignty has been restored to the Shasta Indian Nation over another 2800 acres. Good things are happening. Great things are possible. https://lostcoastoutpost.com/2024/aug/28/today-klamath-river-flowing-free-first-time-more-c/
Went out and distributed food to our neighbors at the food pantry tonight.
We had enough left over afterwards to stock up the community pantry & free fridge.
We ran out of room. So I took boxes of fresh turnips and boxes of cereal home for storage. I'll push them out to the community fridge and pantry this week as there is room.
We have the literal ability to feed everyone for free. And we can. And we are.
On this #TransDayOfVisiblity, I want to specifically highlight Bernie Wagenblast.
She is one of the famous announcer voices for New York City's Metropolitan Transit Authority! (See video for demonstration)
From her wikipedia page: Bernie Wagenblast is a transportation journalist, radio personality and voice-over artist. She is the founder and editor of the Transportation Communications Newsletter. She also edits The AASHTO Daily Transportation Update, published by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and hosts AASHTO's ETAP Podcast and the ITE Talks Transportation podcast for the Institute of Transportation Engineers.

I'd like to see jupiter.blue at the triple point of #cyberpunk, #biopunk, and #solarpunk.
Player actions disproportionally influence the direction the "story" goes.
Cyberpunk: A picotech dystopia dominated by the economics & corporations of the Europa Trade Zone.
Biopunk: The quest for bodily autonomy, and the rise of more and more synthetic humanoids.
Solarpunk: A utopian perspective on fates, scarcity and abundance, sharing and collectivism, and adapting (to/the) inhospitable environments.
This is what I've learned this year. Suit it to taste/#climate.
Fava beans, lentils and/or Scarlet runners depending on the temperatures.
Swiss chard, figs and blackberries, woodland or alpine strawberries depending on climate.
Mulberry trees, hazelnuts, and chives. There is also something called tree kale or purple tree collard.
Amaranth grows where it's very hot. Use the beans and #composting to nurture the soil.
3-4 Kilowatt hour incoming #solar charge, and about 9 to 10 KW hours of lithium phosphorus batteries.
Run nothing but 48 volt systems or you're wasting your time.
This radiant installation pictured below has given me a 20° variance between external and internal temperatures.
I use the lights from some cloning chambers I built into the house to stabilize the temperatures through the winter. Vent heat from LED light fixtures into the house. If you need more heat, use a wood burning stove.
It gets a little chilly but it can drop below 20° f and it stays habitable inside.
This is one layer of the insulation, my math called for two. Halfway done I will still make it through this winter.
I use the water storage to further stabilize the temperature.
I made it 80% of the year with just this pitiful water catchment system I installed in a hurry.
It is two small tarps going into a shady 30 gallon water bucket.
The upgrade will be an 8x8 tarp headed into a 50 gallon rain barrel.
The gardens take more water than humans. For months sometimes it's simply will refuse to rain.
When it does rain, the power takes a hit thus of the batteries.
Expect to put the farm ahead of everything else.
Cut down invasive trees. Use them for firewood and to hide you from the outside.
Do not bulldoze Fern Gully. Any clearing you create will then have to be managed.
A composting toilet that separates the liquid is essential.
Be mindful of bugs at all times in all places or eventually they will remind you forcefully that they exist.
An #ecosystem of dragonflies, lizards, and bats has sprung up to deal with endless swarms of insects.
Yellow jackets live nearby and outnumber the bees 50 to one. The yellow jackets and wasp do most of the pollinating as unfortunate as that is.
In this new world you have forbidden bees or nothing.
Birds are a double-edged sword, but there is nothing worse than an unchecked bug swarm being your existence for the rest of your life.
Squirrels, chipmunks, woodchucks, All manner of groundhog, hedgehogs, larger animals such as deer join the crows.
Work something out with the birds, work something out with a yellow jackets, work something out with the animals and the trees.
You are building an ecosystem, a small world.
The condensation from the leaves creates a rain every morning.
I'm not sure what tipping point stops this, but I have no plans to find out.
This kind of depends on going #vegan, I'm not going to lie. Supplement it with textured vegetable protein, nutritional yeast, and multivitamins.
A simple thing is to glob peanut butter into a bowl of course cut oats, then sprinkle with cinnamon.
You should plan on some sort of internet connection, recreation, and a shower or two at least every week, or you will quickly go mad.
Time your heavy labor for shower days. That way you won't be stuck gross.
Keep peroxide, witch hazel, creams, and health and beauty aides of course on hand.
Wash your clothes in a bustub and rinse them out in the storms.
Learn to build fences and barriers both living and material. Grow blackberry up a deer fence made of t-post, these posts can be driven to anchor a row of cinder blocks to the ground. This will also deter vehicles. A layer of barbed wire deters humans.
Create walls of hazel and figs. Learn to work the #hedge.

I call it the free store plus, because you can plus me some money if you like. While I don't hassle, and I am a humble man, calamity ironically struck before I was prepared. Folks have asked me how to find and build community.
Here is a very pragmatic and approachable way to find the community in your local town or neighborhood.
A little of bit of the concept with a focus on praxis.
So if you're new to community and mutual aid, don't think about what you can build. You're going to be wrong. People have already tried what you're thinking and dropped it back at version 0.3 - Everyone is on 8.2c right now.
So join what exists. Once you get good at it, then you can build out from there - with the knowledge of what is actually needed and works.
Quick note: Things are working. You're just not hearing about it via corporate news. Because it doesn't make those corps money. But its working and has been working. Glad you are joining us now! I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised as what exists around you and what you've been missing out on. Everyone joins at some point. Glad you're here now.
How do you find what exists?
The simple answer is, via community. But you haven't joined the community, so how do you find community without the community!
Since you're here, on the internet, let's start with the internet.
One thing: Folks building and running mutual aid aren't always building and running websites. They're meeting actual people doing physical things in the world. So their websites suck. Also, putting things out publicly runs the risk of inviting the nose of town government and their police forces. Sometimes posting publicly is a *BAD IDEA*. So they don't. You understand OpSec. They understand it better.
But, you certainly can start on the internet to find a "doorway".
Mutual Aid and community is DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT from charities/non-profits. I won't go into it here, but the two (mutual aid and charities/non-profits) aren't the same and actually opposed to each other.
Buuuuuut.....
Folks overlap between the two.
So I might focus on mutual aid, but I'll work with some charities because their apparatus furthers a mutual aid goal in the immediacy.
With that in mind, you can search out charities on the internet. They are well established there and are often upheld by local govt and churches. So they're protected.
Certainly go find some charities that align with your "one thing" (the thing you'll focus on now until you learn about more).
The big thing though, is the charity is not the goal. The people that work there are the goal. You are building a network. So go and meet people but BE FUCKING CHILL about your goals. You start spouting off mutual aid and bad things happen. So just be quiet and listen (this being quiet and listening is going to be your main skill to develop for a long while... so embrace it now).
You'll mostly find old boomers in retirement and religious folks with some politicians. They are charity folks. Great. But you're looking for folks that don't fit those molds. You're looking for the hippies, the socialists, the anarchists, the folks who have grown up poor and now have some means. "One of these things is not like the other". Find the anomalies and follow *their* lead.
You're going to sit in these charities for months while you meet people. Listen to "small talk". If it's Jesus focused, just smile and nod and praise god.
But if it's apparatus building and working with other groups, those are the conversations you want to join in on.
I'll say that again:
If the conversation is about WORKING WITH OTHER GROUPS on shared goals... get in on that. I don't care if its other charities. Get in on it.
After a while, you'll start meeting folks that are building real mutual aid. Learn the initiatives in your area and you'll find and settle into the groups that are doing work but not advertising on social media about it.
So.
Where to start?
Pick one of the following areas (there are more, but these are entry points):
- Food.
- Homeless outreach.
- Literacy / schooling.
- Political access and voting.
Just pick one area and find groups that do that thing. Don't worry about picking the right one. You're going to be moving around for a bit while you learn, so its fine. They all flow.
For Food: Find your local Food Bank and Food Pantries. Feeding America is a good start. Look there. Food Banks need lots of volunteers. Find a thing you can do and do it. Local churches act as Food Pantries. Go to those and help hand out food. If you're really lucky, find a place that makes and serves hot food. DO THAT!!! You'll get real close to mutual aid right away.
For Homeless outreach, look up local shelters - sure. Shelters tend TO ABSOLUTELY SUCK!!! So your mileage may vary. Look for places that gather up clothes and coats and hand them out. Look for places that serve the homeless communities and do that.
For Literacy and schooling, look up various elementary schools, libraries, and the same. After school programs for children. Boys and Girls clubs and the like as well. If you have kids, talk with your school counselors and ask them about the school programs that serve under-privileged families.
For political access and voting, don't join a political party. Instead find local orgs that focus on registering people for voting. The NAACP shines in this. You don't have to be black to join the NAACP. Local DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) are also a good place to look.
Great. So how do you find them?
A quick note on internet searches just to get it out of the way: Search for "city or town name" and:
- "food bank"
- "food pantry"
- "mutual aid"
- "after school programs"
- "voter advocacy"
- "homeless shelter"
- "women's shelter"
- "town resources"
- "library"
On that last note: The BEST PLACE TO START is your local library.
Just go hang out in the library for a while. They post A LOT of stuff for the town. Classes, resources, groups, events, etc. And by "post" I actually mean physical posts. Fliers on the wall and on physical "announcement boards". The librarians themselves are great. Just ask them. They're there to help. Literally.
In fact, don't approach looking for these groups as a volunteer (I hate that word). Don't approach them as a person looking to contribute and build.
Instead, approach these groups as a person who could benefit from them. So for food, ask the librarians to help you find "food pantries for distributions". The libraries are geared to help the community. So get all the info on that, and then flip it around and go to the food pantries and ask how you can help.
So. Internet search for groups is an okay start. But go to the local library and ask.
All you need is ONE WAY in. Once you find some sort of group doing something - anything... go there. Then meet the people. Find a stray community worker that also works there and learn from them. Then find out about the other groups that meet and are building and doing. Go to those in person meetings and spread from there.
(Ask questions in this thread and I and others will give you ideas.)
Also, if you need help finding those initial groups, DM me with your town name and I'll give you a list of groups that you can start with.

What is Solarpunk - An Intro with resources:
So solarpunk is an artistic aesthetic, literary genre, and social activism.
The artistic aesthetic tends to focus on the elements of solarpunk (discussed later) in an uplifting, colorful, and hopeful presentation. While it has no set limitations, popular aesthetics are art nouveau and studio ghibli styles.
The literary genre is "protopia" in style. It shows a pragmatic utopia while addressing present day social concerns. Some of it shows the ideal within a hopepunk and/or cozycore plot. Others have higher conflict and show the current social concerns being addressed and remediated.
The social activism side seeks to bring about that protopia world in the present day. The focus is to bring about a post-scarcity world where everyone has the basics of life covered while emphasizing increasing time for rest, luxury, the arts, culture, and community.
While these themes are covered in other movements (many of which are not opposed and work well with solarpunk), the solarpunks themselves seek to use modern day (and near future) technology to assist in this post-scarcity world. Technologies such as automation, renewable energies, and economies of scale - currently utilized by various ruling classes - to instead be used by the working class. Further efforts are made within degrowth (removing technology for technologies sake, and consumption for consumption's sake).
While not solely limited to anarchic politics, many of the approaches are non-hierarchical in nature and when they are hierarchical, they often focus on local political structures, decentralized, and distributed, with cooperation between various local groups for a national and inter-national co-op structure.
Long and short, solarpunks were tired of being warned of the present dystopia of cyberpunk without solutions to overcome that dystopia. They yearned for positive stories and art that showed a direction to pursue. And they wanted to act in the now to bring about that change.
Solarpunk is not the only movement towards protopia and progressive social change. And it should not be the only movement. But it adds its take on how to approach remediating current social and environmental and material crises.
The areas of focus are (but not limited to):
Post-scarcity: Food, Water, Shelter, Healthcare, Education, Transportation, and Energy (energy is focused on renewables, efficiencies, and lower energy requirements)
Social and environmental justice, minority and worker rights, equitable distribution of resources
Arts, beauty, aesthetics, culture
Rest, leisure, community bonds, and protection for individual rights

- Community and Peer to Peer support and mental healthcare, mutual aid groups, community support and protection groups
- Solar and wind and other renewable energy at a small scale, localized decentralized energy grids, community prep and resiliency
- Art and literature and music and dance.
- Tenant co-ops, removing shelter and homes as an asset class, "non-profit" housing development
- Community Health Insurance schemes, "Non-profit" insurance. Direct negotiation with local doctors, specialists, etc.
- Public Transit, Trains, Subways, Light Rail, Bicycles, Personal Electric Vehicles (PEVs), pedestrian access, city design and planning
Beware:
Green Washing - Just cause its pretty doesn't mean its sustainable or solarpunk or non-exploitative.
Beware Capitalist Co-option - They like to sell back everything, including the concept of tearing down Capitalism
- Compare this advertisement that looks like solarpunk: Dear Alice by Chiboni: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-Ng5ZvrDm4
- To the "decommodified" version (pay attention to how they changed the name from "Donations" to "Commons" - moving away from capitalist propaganda of "charity" and into an actual mutual aid approach: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqJJktxCY9U
Solarpunk is a vibrant and living philosophy, style, and approach. It's not the end all be all and its not meant to be the end all be all. It has it's issues and legitimate criticism. But its an approach that generates hope and it committed to dealing with actual issues using actual pragmatic solutions within the constraint of actual ethics.
During a time when we're all beat down and exhausted and fearful - solarpunk pushes back and says Fuck That. I'm going to live. I'm going to be happy. And I'm going to work to ensure that everyone else lives and is happy.
