I really love the catch-up feature on @phanpy. When I don't have time to scroll through my timeline on the Fediverse, I can simply see the most shared, liked, and commented-on posts from the networks *I decided to follow*. I know I'll still miss some good posts, but that's how I discover good ones I missed.

British golf pro Georgia Ball's "mansplaining" social media post has gone viral. The 90-second clip, filmed at a driving range near Liverpool, has been viewed more than 10 million times. The video shows Georgia, a certified PGA pro and instructor, practising her swing, only to be given "helpful" tips by a male golfer. The BBC has the story — and the clip.

There’s been a lot of talk about #socialmedia companies’ power as users post support for #Palestine and report subsequent shadowbans.
We looked into it on Instagram—and found the platform:

⚠️ demoted photos of soldiers, tanks, and city ruins
⚠️ deleted captions without warning
⚠️ categorized comments criticizing Israel + supporting Palestine as “spam”
⚠️ limited users’ ability to appeal moderation decisions

There's a renewed conversation around the lack of options for migrating post history when you move to a new Mastodon server.
And seeing a few people mentioning how this can be a reason for folks to give up on the fediverse when their server shuts down, I hope the Mastodon team will prioritize this.

David's article really resonated with me because I've been thinking for a long while now to create a newsletter (or three) to surface barely heard voices.
On Substack, for example, the voices I hear are overwhelmingly from the United States, and it is incredibly hard to find voices from Asia and South-East Asia. It's a source of huge frustration for me because the most common narratives about my part of the world is from the United States, and a lot of times these narratives are distorted, skewed to American values and is not what is really happening in my region. Yet, when I try to speak up on Substack, I never get seen as the algorithm is prioritising US voices and Substacks. Worse, they are also boosting only popular ones, which means the most popular narrative is the loudest.
I have occasionally shared links to South-East Asian Substacks and blogs, and each time I do, I get messages of gratitude. However, I still wondered if my tiny act of rebellion would do anything to move the needle in terms of being heard in an English-speaking Internet overwhelmed by Western voices and narratives.
David's post reminded me that yes, I should put in some effort to help surface more unknown corners of the Internet. Maybe we won't get rid of the algorithmic complacency sweeping society now, but at least we'll do some tiny thing to help create a messy but human algorithm instead.

I joined infosec and IT groups, shut down Twitter, Bluesky, LinkedIn, and all that shit. I'm stuck with Mastodon, Reddit, and Github, and I still have to constantly dodge shitty people who only talk about politics.
Obviously the problem is not social media but human stupidity.
I'm narrowing the spectrum of people I follow, filtering and blocking unbearable topics.
As expected, I use compartmentalization and have accounts to read stealthily and without interacting.
I think I'll end up leaving Mastodon too. Maybe it's just another silly utopia.

I was talking with a friend about dating apps, privacy, security and safety.
They are using Feeld, which lets you tag specific kinks -- and which changed their TOS about 2 years ago (IIRC) to specify that they sell user data. (In a massive betrayal of the trust and safety of their user base.)
My friend's response was that they aren't ashamed of who they are and if an app wants to sell their data, no big deal.
My position was that in a time of rising fascism, it's really worth thinking about how in the 1930's, IBM set up the systems to tag and sort people by "undesirable" qualities. In Germany.
I fear for people with all my heart.
For the reading comprehension impaired, let me be clear: I'm not telling anyone not to live their life. I'm saying be smart, raise your game on privacy and security, and keep yourself and your people as safe as you can in a brutal world.
